The Mobilgas Economy Run was a major event in the 50's and 60's, which involved drivers in stock cars maintaining an average speed along a given route to see who can get the best fuel economy. Basically, a hypermiling competition. Competing in the event was good publicity, so most brands did. Given that this is one of very few pictures I could find of a DeSoto in the competition, I don’t think they did particularly well.

I’m still sorta surprised this was a thing, with gas only 20 cents a gallon...
My father had a Coupe DeVille (472?) and I’ve always wondered what kind of mileage he got with the thing. He had a really long commute for his contract job but I don’t think gas ‘cost’ ever even registered with him.
