Opp o is dead, Long L ive Oppo. Are you going to read Jalopnik after this? I’m not. If they don’t need us, why should we be there for them?
![]() 11/14/2020 at 15:29 |

Oppo lives (Opposite-lock.com) But i would imagine that Jalopnik’s readership will drop dramatically for a while.
I’ll still hang around, but I find the FP too ad laden and cluttered to use regularly

It’s not Jalopnik’s fault. They tried to save us (on Kinja). I’ll continue to support Rory, Torch, David, and the OPPO alums by reading their stuff, as much as I might like to hurt G/O.

Look man, fuck the herb, but Jalopnik didn’t do this to us. They went to bat for us.

You do understand that this is not jalopniks decision, right? And that oppo has been free-riding for years? We should be grateful we got this far
![]() 11/14/2020 at 15:39 |

They have for years
![]() 11/14/2020 at 15:43 |

I get that, but most of Jalopnik’s staff has moved on to other places already and the ones we have left will easily find work somewhere else . This isn’t about our beloved authors. It’s about sending a message.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 15:47 |

A not in significant number of Jalopnik authors came from Oppo. G/O is shooting themselves in the foot here.

Yes, the middle of a pandemic with accompanying economic downturn is exactly when we should be rooting for people to lose their jobs.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:19 |

I'm not rooting for them to lose their jobs, I'm rooting for them to find better ones. Jalopnik has always shed talent.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:23 |

Even Jalopnik’s EIC went to bat for us, and they have spent a lot of time trying to find ways of saving what’s here. It’s 100% Herb and his Herb lawyers here.
That being said, ads and the new interface has made Jalopnik completely unreadable, so I likely won’t return. Even with AdBlock, it’s very difficult to comment, and that’s part of what made Jalopnik great.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:25 |

Meh, after Doug and Steve stopped writing for them, they were hardly worth reading anyway. Truthfully after Gawker crashed and burned, that was probably the end of good Jalopnik. They soldiered on okay for a little while, but it steadily deteriorated.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:25 |

Yes. G/O is.
Not jalopnik
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:26 |

G/O media can G/O F/K themselves

So let them decide when they’re ready.
You’re taking this very personally but it’s not your livelihood suffering from this decision.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:28 |

I think he means that most of us where only going there since it was the FP of oppo. Sure I found oppo because of Jalopnik. But once I leave the oppo on kinja, I’m done with kinja
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:28 |
|
I’m 100% behind everyone under that Jalopnik banner. But supporting Jalopnik means supporting Herb.
And I haven’t been able to log into Jalopnik and Oppo/the kinja blocgs at the same time for a very long time. I don’t know why- I thought it was all one Kinja but something is broken.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:32 |
|
That is another knock for Jalopnik, I can’t log on to there on an iPhone. I could Oppo though.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:33 |

To my point, there used to be many good subblogs to Jalopnik. Lane splitter, the outdoorsy one, the military one, and there was a writer in Japan providing other unique content. Ohh not to mention good motorsports coverage. Once they did away with those, it was only downhill.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:37 |

Yeah, that is what he means. And who does that screw? Ms Mercedes, Tom, and the other OPPO they just hired (yeah, tom started on OPPO). It hurts Rory, who tried his best to keep us around. It hurts Ralph and torch. So why? I don’t get it.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:39 |

I’ll keep reading them, especially with a couple recent opponauts being ‘promoted’ to front page. Want to see how they get on.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:39 |
|
Also, at least three of those authors are still there. Lets f uck with their livelihood!
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:41 |

Th ank you for telling everyone what I mean. Your input is highly valued... by someone, I’m sure.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 16:48 |

I'll keep supporting fellow Opponughts cuz it's the least I can do. However if and when they move on I'll stop reading Jalopnick. I'm definitely done with the other sites though, now I am just supporting people I like and that's it.

iOS and macOS Safari blocks cross-site cookies by default. Enabling that will allow you to log in (the login form is kinja.com, but the FP is on a different domain).
![]() 11/14/2020 at 17:14 |

I’d rather the writers go someplace else with less shitty advertising, and read them there. Where’d Fancy Kristen go? Business Journal? Something like that?
![]() 11/14/2020 at 17:32 |
|
Same here. It’s been probably 2 years since I was able to log onto the fp on mobile.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 17:37 |

Like I said, I’m only still here cause of Oppo. Without oppo i don’t have a foot in the Kinja door. I’m not going to go out of my way to read jalopnik, when I hardly even went there even with oppo. This is not out of spite. Good for the ex oppos that are there, best of luck to them. But I don’t owe them anything.
I don’t think anything else can be added to this conversation

Kristen is at Business Insider, but it seems like all of Jalopnik’s staff are moving to The Drive. Stef, Mate, Partrick and Tyler have moved are over there now. Like Jalopnik, it was founded by Mikey Spinelli and it looks like he’sbeen successfully poaching the Jalopnik crew.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 18:21 |

Fair enough, I guess
![]() 11/14/2020 at 18:24 |
|
This exactly. People bemoan the loss of a community but won't support people who came up from it, are a part of it still, and went to bat for it. Don't make any damn sense to me
![]() 11/14/2020 at 18:32 |
|
To The Drive , then!
![]() 11/14/2020 at 18:38 |
|
I’ve mostly migrated over to TheDrive. I still occasionally poke through the new stuff on Jalopnik , but I spend maybe 5% of the time I used to on there. The ever-pervasive ads have really made it difficult to enjoy, and ad blockers effectively render the comment section all but useless.
There are some good writers still on board, and I hope they are eventually able to find jobs elsewhere. I’ve accepted that management will eventually neuter Jalopnik along the same lines of Deadspin, and it’s probably for the best.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 20:28 |
|
With an ad blocker using
https://jalopnik.com/latest
is manageable, but I never know which writers are still around.

Yee, and also haw. I’m part-time at The Drive and still looking for a full-time job, so READ ME SO THEY HAVE TO HIRE ME FULL-TIME, heh. I need to rebuild a dang parsh engine.
Alanis went to BI as well, FWIW. Ballaban landed at CNN.
I’m still going to read the main page here, too. They’re not just good dudes who write fun stuff who I still consider friends—they’ve been actively fighting to get Oppo our archives and make sure the herb doesn’t surprise-delete us. They’re the good folks who deserve our support.
I just wish they’d friggin’ overthrow the herb. Seize the means of blog production. Defect. Yeet the herb whose head is so far up his anus that he can see daylight out his mouth straight into a volcano.

I can absolutely confirm after 2.5 years of unemployment that no, it isn’t easy to land somewhere else. I’m only part-time/freelance everywhere I write and I’m not going to sugarcoat it: I honestly hate my life. I feel like the garbage leftover no one in the industry wants on a permanent basis.
From what I’ve seen, it’s easier to find another job when you have one already...which I don’t. I f the herb nukes a bunch of other positions, those folks won’t, either. The job market for journalists was imploding long before the pandemic hit, and now finding work is even more impossible. Both places I was talking to about a possible full-time role put hiring on hold when this stupid pandemic hit, and things are still on hold. With this garbage getting worse again and more and more businesses struggling just to keep going, ad revenue is down and I don’t see anything changing for the better. It only ever gets worse. Hell, my life only ever gets worse.
I do not wish unemployment on anyone else.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 21:00 |

I’m really excited about the new additions. They’ve picked up a good slate of writers who do some really interesting stuff.

Ain’t called Get/Out Media for nothin’.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 21:06 |

aka J/O Media, for the jerkoff herbs at the top.
![]() 11/14/2020 at 21:17 |

What happened to you still pisses me off. You were always one of the best writers on this site and letting you go was a huge mistake. Let me be clear: I am not s a ying I want Jalopnik to die, or wishing unemployment on its staff. But Jalopnik’s ownership in the last few years has made one bad decision after the next . Many of the things that made Ja lopnik great are gone now, from many of its writers to the sub- blogs and overall weirdness (Jason tries but he can’t keep Jalopnik weird by himself).
No, I’m probably not really going to completely swear off Jalopnik- there are still a couple people there I want to read . And I will absolutely be clicking every Stef article on The Drive, becase the stuffed turducken isn’t going to feed itself .
![]() 11/14/2020 at 22:31 |

Aww, thanks. Rally Chicken’s eating me out of house and home, TBH.
I left because Univision sucked and I didn’t trust them not to lay more people off or sell the company to heinous private equity herbs. WELP.
The ownership situation here is hot garbage, no doubt, but the site-level folks are still trying to hold it down. Maybe you should toss this feedback their way? I’m extremely pro-weirdness.

The fall of Gawker was really the beiginning of the end for all the Gawker si tes. You were right- Jalopnik got sold, and the talent was largely gutted. I hope The Drive does the right thing and hires you full time. I’m sure we can get some dirt on Spinelli if you need extra leverage.

“Ghoul” more in the “evil garbagelord who actively makes the world a worse place,” not so much the supernatural kind.
