Got the head out today! It only took like 5 hours from start until I was cleaned up at the end. And of course I’m going to have to spend at least that much time putting it all back together again. Still, glad it didn’t turn into a multi-day tear down so far. Next step is to get the head replaced and get my parts order in.
And some celebratory lunch for a day of hard work.
Met a lot of challenges along the way but nothing of a show stopper. Just tedious work unbolting things and figuring out how to access the difficult stuff.

Well it would have been real fast if it was just an exchange. But they are all out of old miata heads. They said turnaround time for a rebuild of mine though is 3 days for $300 so I will drop it off tomorrow. Took a look and did some leak testing, cylinder 2 definitely has a very bad exhaust valve. So that's highly likely to be my problem! Since I gotta wait a few days for that plus the other parts, I might order a coolant reroute kit too since it's bound to be easier to install with the head off.

$ 300 sounds very reasonable, the coolant reroute sounds like a good idea but also a slippery slope.
May aswell do the heater hoses, radiator, lca bushings, clutch, and reupholster the seats

Good point. I certainly can just do it later since head removal is not required for it. Avoiding scope creep is valuable because otherwise I'll end up at lfx swap in no time.
