Is my MBP giving up the ghost in solidarity with oppo?
Turn up the volume. Its STILL doing this right now. Im backing up some work I did on it just in case.

Could be a fan? But other than that, I would back that up ASAP.

Do you know of a good complete mirror backup solution?

whats that mysterious ticking noise?

Hope you like ARM

I use Time Machine for all my backups. That said, I have never needed to restore from a TM backup, but I would imagine it works just fine.

TimeMachine?

Carbon Copy Cloner? I don’t use it, but many in the biz swear by it.

If half the stuff they’re saying is true, there’s no reason not to (other than locking yourself inside a dungeon, inside a castle, inside a walled garden).

If you put your ear to it, where is the sound coming from roughly? Front of the machine, back?
If you shut it off, does that sound stop INSTANTLY or do you hear it ‘spool down’?
Go into the Disk Utility and see somewhere if there is a button that details SMART info on the hard drive.
Does it seem slower than usual? Longer loading times when opening files and such?

I’ve heard similar in the past on my old wor k MacBook Pro. I think I used some manual fan control to spin up the fans to maximum for a minute or so in the hope it would kill or cure. In this case it cured and it’s been behaving for at least six months.

Up by the delete key, sound stops instantly , no spinning hard disc.

Does this machine have a spinning disk HDD? Or is the only moving component the fan? HDD would be easy to replace. Fan should be possible, but I imagine it would be way more of a pain (still probably worth it to save the machine) .

That doesn’t sound good - that’s a static/feedback sound which might as simple as a failing speaker, but could also be a larger short.

What model of MBP?

Might be it. I blasted the left fan and it sounds normal but the right fan sounds different but bad and 500 rpm slow.

its a solid state on motherboard HDD. Im thinking its the fan.

sounds like a short to me, I checked the speakers, its not them. I think its the right fan.

What model MBP? Might be pretty easy to replace the fan if necessary.

It’s probably a fan. Easy fix and not as dire as it sounds.

If it’s the fan, the g ood news is that even if the fan dies completely, the machine will probably just throttle down its CPU and be a bit slower, so you shouldn’t lose anything. Some possibility it locks up instead of just slowing down, but modern hardware has gotten pretty good at this (I’ve lost two fans in work laptops, and my personal laptop doesn’t even have a fan).

Which macbook do you have? At first I thought it sounded like a failing hard drive, but figured it can’t be that old.

Yeah, I have apple care on this machine but it SUUUUUCKS to use it because of work level encryption . It takes me weeks and weeks to get it back when I have to hand it to our IS department. If its hardware and they can replace it onsite that would be ideal.

If it does turn out to be a fan, here is a disassembly guide if you fancy changing it out yourself?

Perfect! They would freak at the thought of me doing, but I will just add that to my list of things that I do that they hate.

I’ve changed a motherboard and battery in similar vintage Macbook Pros before. It’s not too bad! (I do computer repair on the side)
