First of all, I love you all, you are a great community, and i know that
this community will survive, whether or not OPPO will be shut down.
To me it this whole shut down feels like a personal vendetta from people who obviously have no idea how to run a business.
Attacking your loyal customers/consumers like that is a big deal for me.
And i know i won’t be coming back to Jalopnik anymore after the OPPO shutdown.
I still like car news, and good reviews, i wonder what are your recommendations for an worthy alternative to jalopnik.com?

I hear opposite-lock.com (aka “The Hyphen”) is pretty cool...
As for an alternative or something that is “what jalopnik used to be” - I wish I had a good answer, but I’ve not found anything.

Yeah it looks great, i hope it is something that will be sustainable in the long run.
I was wondering more about automative news,
Is there a decent website out there?

The Drive and Road & Track both have a ton of former Jalopnik writers on their rosters. The downsides are R&T doesn’t have a comment section at all and The Drive’s is really weak. There’s really no other site that has the community Jalopnik has.

There is a lot of talk going on about forum (O-L) vs blog (DT). My plan, at least for now, is to hang out on O-L for the day to day comms, but post my long form stuff to both DT and O-L, unless that becomes a pain in the butt.

I’m probably just going to pin The Drive for similar FP content. Already look at Warzone a bunch.

Kinja at large has been attacking it’s customers for years. Kotaku attacks gamers for being disgusting bigoted nerds. Deadspin attacked sports fans for only caring about sports and not politics. Jalop has attacked enthusiasts on more than one occasion for polluting, for not driving the bizzaro beige grey market cars all the journos gush over, for pointing out their shit writing. And frankly- that’s your damn customer base. Grody as they may be, the customer is always right.
Hobbies themselves are highly unnecessary
other than for entertainment. The net emotional benefit they pay can easily be ignored for their excessive and wasteful nature. The problem being is that we have to have lives, and have fun. and it seems to me that the political types running kinja just hate when anyone else has fun.

Thanks for the comments on the hyphen - I appreciate it.
I’m going to hit the drive for now. They haven’t been great in the past but with a lot of former jalop talent now might be better.

I’ve been going to The Drive. Good writers there, plenty of Jalopnik alumni. The Truth About Cars is good for auto news.

I’ve been working directly with customers for most of my career.
if there is one thing that i learned, is that you have to respect your customer.
Yes, sometimes they can be irrational, and sometimes they can be childish, to say the least.
But having a dialog is critical.
I’ve never seen a situation where one sided action, actually worked.
A thing which the current management seems to fail to understand.
The fact that so many of the websites on this organization have become essentially a very big ad (yes im looking at you Gizmodo and life hacker), is just sad.
There are ways to deal with toxic communities like several websites in the same organization,
The fact that management decided to take such an aggressive action against thier own customers, is something that i will never be able to understand.
But on the other hand, ive seen a lot of of completely disconnected executives, that see only short term, that im not surprised that they decided in our case to take this kind of action.
My heart goes out to the people who actually create the content here, who are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Decent people who try to make a living doing something they like.

I think The Drive’s content breadth is not too bad, and you get non-boiler plate auto news regurgitation nor strictly politically -bent feedback.
