So, I saw that y’all were saying nice stuff about jminer and Rally’s test site, and I went over to make an account. Seems promising. Certainly looks visually slick. One thing that raised my eyebrow when I registered was that I had to assent to allowing it to send me emails. That’s okay since I use my Oppo email anyway. I like that we have sub forums there. I didn’t look long enough to see if there is a PM function. The ability to PM in a forum has advantages and disadvantages. It allows people to hook up IRL, but there can also be some back biting and gossip behind backs if people get juvenile. However, I’ve always thought we are grown up enough to handle it.

I didn’t see a way to imbed pictures and videos in that site. Also it required that pictures be already on the web per my recollection which is a pain, I understand that the forum probably requires that to save server space but that would be a pain to me

Yeah, it looks pretty snappy, especially when you realize jminer put that together in a day. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but I’m sure those will get smoothed out. Creating long form posts as I do, I find j miner’s interface significantly better than DT’s. Heck, you can’t even do bold or italics over there. I f we do end up on oppositehyphenlock , I may post to both places in an effort to increase readership.

People have embedded videos. I was able to download and post pictures from my phone but it won’t be able to handle a lot right now from my understanding.

Pictures can be uploaded from your devices memory, the icon to do that is slightly hidden on the far right.

The place does one better than PM and has a chat feature built-in.

Email notifications are broken at the moment. There is an option to send out regular newsletters but I don’t think that’ll be happening for a while (if ever) .

Thanks for the honest feedback - definitely a labor of love right now, but Oppo deserves it!

Server’s back up for now, but at a new IP so dns propagation might take a while for folks to be able to access it again.

There is an issue with instagram embedding currently, but youtube and direct uploads of pics/gifs works great with a bunch of members doing this already.

That is probably fixed now.  We were on a little bitty AWS server for initial dev and testing.  Just spun it up again as a production-size(ish) server and we’ll see how that goes.  Hopefully it’ll solve any of the login issues people were having with server load.

I just did a scheduled post over there for tomorrow morning. They base everything on UTC, which makes sense, but I have to go through some mental gymnastics to figure out when to schedule the post. Turns out that UTC is CST +6 hours. It’s bad enough that Kinja uses Eastern time.

Not a bad idea. I had a friend who was an international cargo pilot. All of his schedules were done in UTC, and he kept his watch in UTC and did the math wherever he was.

I appreciate that, it’s running on an AWS EC2 server , 4 core 16 GB ram on ubuntu at the moment so that should be ample enough for a good bit.

If I was home right now it would be running out of my basement , AWS gives us solid scalability options though and bandwidth isn’t a problem. It’s in the Ohio region which is fairly central too which should help with latency.

Eventually if this hits critical mass I’ll split off the DB engine from the server but we’ll see how it goes.

Serious question: what are the odds that you can and will stay as heavily invested (time-wise) to the future “maintenance” of OPPO as you are now, or at least as necessary once it’s built ? If there’s any chance you can’t/won’t due to (life, whatever), is there another OPPO or three that you’re confident that can step into your place?

I’m just asking because I don’t want the future of OPPO to rest in any one person’s hands. The necessary info to keep our community going should always be retained by a small, loyal group of members who can keep things running if any one is hit by the proverbial bus.

That’s definitely a risk leaving this in one persons hands. Ultimately I’d like to have a couple other folks with access - things happen. There are definitely a few other technical oppos I’ve talked to in depth about this that I think should share the load.

I have no hesitation being unable to support this long term though . While now it’s a big lift in terms of hours spent, once we settle into a rhythm with functioning mods I doubt it’ll take a lot to time to maintain.

Cool - just one of those things we need to consider and talk about. If we do all the work to build new OPPO and get everyone settled there, but leave the “keys to the kingdom” in one person’s hands, that sets us up for future problems.

Assuming the old mod group mostly  becomes the new mod group, the leadership of that group should have all the necessary info (if not the required ability), in case of the unexpected happening.

And when daylight savings time kicks in, it will be UTC +5.

The pilot’s exam includes a bunch of questions about flying between time zones with some times given in local and others given in UTC.

Yes, but it was two years ago. I skipped last year when my mom’s funeral was on what would have been day 1. I was planning this year’s run. We’ll see if the new site is ready in time. Think I should?
