Back to the Future relies on the unreliability of the DeLorean

Doc Brown’s flux capacitor and other electronics are rock solid for something so new, unique and experimental. The movie takes place in 1985 2 years after DeLorean finished production in 1983 and yet some of the main plot points stem from the DeLorean being a huge pile of shiny junk. I just watched a clip on Youtube and it is when (spoiler alert :) ) Marty goes back in time and has to hid the car behind the billboard because it won’t start that he goes to 1955 Doc to get it fixed and has to convince him to get involved.

Later in the movie, just as Marty is getting ready to accelerate and go back to the future it won’t start. This time it isn’t the starter since you can hear it crank but nothing a headbutt to the steering wheel won’t fix.

I chose the header image because it looked neat. It is a model that the photographer added some effects.

Also, kudos to Doc Brown for sticking with his dream. He worked on the flux capacitor for 30 years before he had a usable car. Prequel? Doc Brown the younger years?

No, no, no, no.

You’ve got it all wrong!

See the Delorean failed to start in 1955 after Marty pulled over to see the Lion Estates sign for the first time. The reason is, there are 3 buttons on the steering wheel that control where power goes and whether the Delorean runs off nuclear reactor power, or the 12v battery. The engine and electricals are always turning, however Doc wired in the nuclear reactor to the 12v system on the Delorean to help with performance during a temporal displacement event.

After the event, you should switch the car over to it’s alternator/battery setup using the switch on the steering wheel to keep the Delorean running. Marty didn’t know that because Doc never explained it during his video of the first time travel experiment .

The nuclear reaction was still occurring after the temporal displacement which allowed the Delorean to drive all the way it did, then died. We never see the Delorean start again until Marty is leaving for 1985. The reactor had been sitting, producing energy in a small amount, since he arrived in 1955. That gave the Delorean enough power to start and run down to the start line for the clocktower run.

Doc wouldn’t have known how it was wired up, his main concern was power into the flux capacitor so that’s what he focused on. No fault of his own.

We see Marty accidentally stall the Delorean and there’s not enough power in the reactor system to turn it over and keep it running. In frustration, Marty hits his head on the steering wheel, causing him to hit the switch for the battery system and it springs to life. Marty can then hit the gas and give it hell!

Now, when Marty arrives in 1985 we see him crash then turn the Delorean around to stop and see Red. Again, he stalls the Delorean and kills it. This is due to the Delorean going back on reactor power, as it’s the failsafe when the flux capacitor goes through any temporal experiment. Marty didn’t know he had to hit a switch, so he ran on foot to try and save Doc.

There ya go. I can do a full breakdown on new Oppo if you’d like, but that’s the short version of it.

Wow, if this is accurate than I am blown away (or I am mentally happy to latch on to this) . I need to go check the screenshots of the dash.

Here ya go. I don’t remember which one was the “reactor” switch and which one was alternator/battery switch. Green is for all power though.

I’m writing it down. This is good stuff.

It’s not really cannon, but it’s the easiest way to explain the issues and the buttons. I’ve used it to explain to people before why it’s an issue with Marty and not the car, and why it’s perfectly fine in the later movies.

I plan to spread it around. It really fills in gaps that don’t otherwise make sense. The switches on a steering wheel don’t make a lot of sense but you get a lot of leeway when you build a time machine. It makes a lot of sense that Marty, who is still in high school, doesn’t know how to operate a fancy ish car. When you think about it he did a pretty good job since Doc only gave the most rudimentary once over. Date here,  fuel there,  fluxy thing makes things happen.
