Because they pile up and ultimately suffocate the grass, and are a breeding ground for molds and fungus?

My more extreme of my neighbors actually will be out their with a goddamn shop vac instead of rake, so as not to break apart the leaves and taint the pH level or create areas of dead spots... I mean if you have a REALLY small yard, I can see the effort paying off. But this guy two doors down, out there for SIX HOURS vacuuming his lawn.

He should have broke out the yard-vac for small leaves and branches first.

I mow them into mulch which is the equivalent of one application of fertilizer, I’m told.
But yeah, I had the same thought after I bought my first house and ended up k
illing
the grass.

Probably because HOA.
I just use the lawn mower and mulch em. Any pile left over I put in the compost bin.

Raking leaves is my most-loathed yard care task, probably because it was one of my chores as a kid, and we had a bunch of enormous Norway maples (not the good kind - sugar maples) that would shed leaves for what felt like a full three months.
I’ll happily pay the kid down the street to rake & bag ‘em now , or have a yard care service remove them.

In my long bed F150, I have taken 6 loads of leaves and pine needles to the transfer station in the past 3 weeks. More to follow as the oak and beech are still dropping leaves at a good pace.
I have a nei ghbor that I have seen use a shop vac, not for leaves but for acorns.

Someone needs to tell him about yard vacuums. He could get it done in however long a typical mowing takes.
If he doesn’t want to buy one they are available for rent. I can rent one for $30 for a half day. A small price to save 4hrs.

I have cedars and hemlocks, so instead of tens of thousands of leaves, I get hundreds of billions of needles, 12 months a year...

The real question is why do we spend so much of our time, resources, and real estate to cultivating a plant that does almost nothing but look nice.

One of the things I sometimes do to decompress on the weekends is clear/burn off years of dead leaves in the woods on some unimproved rural land. There is nothing but bare dirt afterwards . The next year , all sorts of grasses and some wildflowers pop up, including some native grasses that are not nearly as common as they should be (that’s obviously not relevant to city lawns). When we stir up the leaves my allergies sometimes hit me so hard I need to get some distance away and sit and drink water for a while .

I somehow have good luck when 85% of the leaves have fallen into my lawn, a heavy wind storm day does the heavy lifting for me.
To be honest, I’ve felt so guilty in the past that I made sure to spot check neighbors’ yards while driving through the subdivision to see if they received my leaves. Luckily, the wind took those, too!

If you don’t rake the leaves on the forrest floor it leads to wild fires. Just ask C alifornia.

Oh, we had a neighbor like that when I was a kid in the ‘80s. Vacuumed his yard, and also used to carry around a little mat in his car that he would put down on the driveway when he pulled in, so he could step out onto that and stand on it while he changed into “inside shoes” and vacuumed the carpets in his car before pulling into the garage.
Was a definite nutcase, he pulled a gun on another neighbor’s Golden Retriever that he accused of pooping on his lawn. Every day after work, he would come over and ask my parents if they had seen that dog on his lawn during the day, then it kind of accelerated.
Years later, I ended up working with a guy who had worked with him in the ‘50s and ‘60s. He remembered that he would fly off the handle and start throwing wrenches if anyone called him by a nickname he hated. Also, one time, he bought a new ‘58 Chevy with air suspension and parked it too close to the porch at a dive bar/hotel, and it raised up and got the bumper stuck under the structure. The police officers that came knew what an asshole he was, so they told him they’d have to take the whole bumper and grille off to get it out, and he ran around in circles in the parking lot whining and crying and screaming.
Yard was absolutely immaculate, though.

Because we want our living environment to look nice?
![]() 11/08/2020 at 17:03 |

Because societal convention has dictated how we're supposed to make it look nice.

Not if its a genuine, well founded, personal preference

But we’ve all been told our entire lives that we should have a nice lawn, so how can you know for sure that’s true and it hasn't just been indoctrinated.

Thank you cor sharing, I already signed up for DriveTribe and Mastodon. I prefer Drivetribe’s UI.

I heard a great idea for dishing out
revenge to someone you hate - throw a bunch of rubber bands on their lawn and driveway. They won’t be able to rake it or va
cuum it, and blowing them off does nothing but produce more litter - so they have to pick each one up individually by hand. Imagine doing that for a nice long hour.

If the neighbor does the same to the third one, etc., you could consider it a community effort. By the end all the lawns are clean!

Most likely on the other side of a main road outside the subdivision
