I leave Oppo alone for one day, and the Kinjapocalypse is already upon us?

I guess I always knew we were really just a bunch of random gearheads stubbornly clinging to an increasingly problematic zombie site that stopped caring about its users long ago... But no, we were so much more than that. Kinja failed to accomplish what it’s developers had intended, but what it did accomplish was something special. It provided the perfect (in theory) home for all sorts of relatively small but close internet communities. There’s a reason why we kept putting up with their crap for so long, darn it! No other social media platform I’ve ever encountered has ever been like this. I’m sure most of us have never met each other in real life, and yet I’ve grown to think of you guys as friends. I hoped against hope that this place would find a way to survive, because it can’t just die... can it? It’s unsettling to think that someone can just pull the plug on all our stories, all our conversations, all our beloved communities... our memories. But they have no emotional connection to what we do here. They don’t care. And we didn’t do what they wanted us to do, so they’re just going to end this place without a second thought...

I guess there’s always Mastodon, Drivetribe, Discord, and Facebook... they always felt like crappy off-brands of the real Oppo, but I guess we’ll just have to make them work... Ugh. Alas, we can’t all be FP authors...

I could handle the quarantining. I could handle murder hornets and meth gators. I could handle not seeing peoples faces, social distancing, rationing toilet paper, this stupid election, and all that other crap. But this? This one hurts.

Many of us are receiving notifications that personal blogs and sub-blogs will be deleted. Kinja is pulling the plug on.. well, Kinja. It’s not 100% confirmed whether Oppo will be deleted, or when. But it seems very likely, and all signs point to yes. Our best hope is probably to migrate to other platforms like Mastodon and Drivetribe, as it’s looking like the Kinjapocalypse is fast approaching. The end is near.

It sounds like this is all related to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Basically, it treats user generated content hosted on commercial websites as no different from someone self-publishing a pamphlet and handing it out on a street corner - the website is the city that owns the sidewalk or the copy shop that has a 25 cent/page copier anyone can use, they’re not liable for whatever people say or print on their property, it’s public access.

There has been a lot of discussion among lawmakers at the state and federal levels about repealing that section, or passing new legislation to heavily neuter it, in which case online companies could be held criminally and/or civily liable for content users post on their sites. This is targeted mainly at Facebook and Google due to the “fake news” stuff people post, but, would have additional, collateral consequences for everything online. I think there’s even some suggestion that the Attorney General would have some leeway in just rein terpreting the statute as written to go after certain websites without needing any new legislation.

2020 man... it really sucks... But I think DT will be a decent solution for the time being, and if someone get s that Oppositelock.com up and running we’ll be golden (though the community would turn into a word of mouth website, which is a bit of a bummer for anyone trying to find communities like this).

I’m grateful I stumbled upon these fantastic folks, and I’m super saddened I never got to go to an Oppomeet. Hopefully there will be one in the future, because at the end of the day, Oppo is Oppo.
