As some of you know, I like watches, in particular Rolex. In fact, w !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . So given my propensity unnecessary car shopping, you could assume I would also do plenty of unnecessary watch shopping as well. It’s a pretty safe assumption since I most certainly do.

Now, I understand that a cheap Timex or even the phone in my pocket is a much more accurate and affordable way to tell the time. I don’t care about that, it’s an object I enjoy. Like the M3, it was something I wanted for a while, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! As with the M3, it’s superfluous, it’s not something I need, more of something I want.

Anyways, on to the watch.

Kinja'd!!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , need I say more? Unfortunately , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , so guess I’ll have to get my oilfield Rolex another way, even if they didn’t stamp SLB on the dial.

Kinja'd!!!

Sadly, I don’t have $4400 lying around to spend on a watch, so sadly, like many all the cars for sale I post here, it won’t be coming home with me. I’ve also spent more than I should on jewelry this year, but I think that was more than worth it.

That’s a very interesting and offbeat watch.  Definitely a conversation-starter.  “This isn’t just any Rolex that people buy to look rich.....”

I love the weird dial variants, just wish I had been more open to buying from a place like this   when I got my Datejust back in 2018.

I love watches but I just can’t get into high end mechanical ones while knowing that they are inherently less accurate than even very cheap quartz-movement ones.

That is a beautiful piece there though.

Being an engineer, I appreciate mechanical things. It somewhat bothered me at first, but now I just appreciate them for what they are. I also get some satisfaction knowing that my Day-Date still runs well even after 47 years.

While I enjoyed my early covid fake rolex toilet paper flex pics, I still don’t own the real thing. I enjoy watches  and recently picked up the Timex Q reissue to be my go to. My entire family has matching rolex watches that were a gift prior to my birth. I have asked for one for every major holiday/life event, yet here I am with my Timex closing in on my 30th birthday holding out hope that maybe this time will be the time.

Love the datejust, even have two “lookalike”, a Rado Purple Horse and an Edox.

T his one with black indices and hands is gorgeous.

It’s the same thing as an ICE versus an electric car (or at least an hybrid).

I don’t care much about accuracy but i really like seeing the movements working (and how it’s made) and have all of this working without any electricity involved.

If i need accuracy i have my phone on my pocket that is synchronized to atomic clocks.

Very cool! Definitely better than the Dominos Pizza ones - https://www.chrono24.com/rolex/rolex-air-king-dominos-pizza-34mm-special-edition-silver-dial—-steel-on-bracelet—id15988444.htm

Hard to imagine Rolex doing branded watches like that these days.

Can’t argue with that one.  Not sure if that blue bezel is original, but I definitely don’t care. That’s all kinds of cool (and probably a just a tad spendy).

I love watches and I can’t stand Rolex unless it’s a Milgauss. Daydate and Dayjust scream “I’m 70+” to me, especially in yellow gold. Submariner and Sea Dweller look like used car salesperson wet dream and are such boring designs which have been around with minor tweaks for half a century. Other than value retention, Rolex does absolutely nothing for me. I do understand they have a cult following and I understand that people love things I do not, so I do know why others buy them though.

In a world where you can buy Omega,  Panerai, vintage Tag, Oris, IWC, and dozens/hundreds cool microbrands, or something as unique as Vortic, I can’t see why one would go super mainstream and “expected”.

Then again, opinions and assholes blah blah..

The only Rolex I see ever owning is my Dad's 25 year anniversary watch from IBM. I love my mechanical watches, but that's just 1 too many zeros for my pocketbook.

It is a lot to spend on something superfluous, so I get it. I don't try and justify mine past the point of I had the money and it was what I wanted.

I mean it's kind of like cars, you can buy something cheap or something completely unnecessary. I, on the other hand, quite like their design. I also wear my Day-Date with an ostrich strap so it's not quite as ostentatious as it could be.

It's not as clean as a regular datejust, but it's unique.

It certainly was a different era then, and you're right, can't imagine them doing this now.

Coincidently, I bought my Day-Date as a 30th present to myself, since my parents surely weren’t going to get me something like that.

I have asked my mom, jokingly, for the past few Christmas's for one.

I also don’t like most of the lineup except the daydate/just , i like some of the submariner and the Milgauss is not too bad but a Yachtmaster or a modern Daytona (i love the old ones without crownguards) is not my cup of tea.

What I probably hate the most, other than the look,  is artificial shortages and price that’s ridiculously high compared to what it “should” be.

You can still probably sell yours and not loose money :)

But i paid maybe 5 0€ for my Rado Purple Horse that is extremely similar to the DateJust, sure it’s not a nice or in a shape as great and the movement would need a service but almost 4500$ for a stainless steel watch with a movement that has nothing outstanding is a bit expensive (but if i was rich i would probably have bought it anyway ) .

For 49$ you can have this one (it’s definitely not as great looking, especially without a proper sunburst dial but a great value ) :

I really like this one , wonder how much it sold for :

This is true. I’m thinking about it to buy this DJ. I would have to get a bracelet for this one, if I got it.

I paid $4500 for my DJ back in 2018, and while it was a lot of money, it was exactly what I wanted then and I’ve throughly enjoyed it.

I bought some cheaper watches off of eBay recently, so there will be a post about those soon. I do quite like the look of those rados.

At least SLB gives them out at a reasonable anniversary year. Halliburton gave out two tone Datejusts for 35 years service and you had to live with the logo on the dial.

This is true, one of the guys I worked with a lot in the field was a 20 year guy, well 19 when I got laid off. I don’t think I ever planned on being at SLB that long, but who knows if I hadn’t gotten laid off.

I did come across those, at least pictures of them in my unnecessary watch shopping. I think the logo on the dial is neat, it’s more that you need 35 years to get one.

One of these days I’d like to get either an SLB or HAL one. A watch dealer I follow on insta posted a SLB/Dowell case, but it sold before I could inquire, which would have been cool since I worked for SLB frac which came from a joint venture between Schlumberger and Dowell. My HAL connection is that they offered me a job back in 2017, given the way things are now, I’m glad I didn’t take it.
