Austria decided to adopt the “neutrality” model, because the Swiss made it attractive. Austria is not in NATO and doesn’t really send troops to international missions, since the terrible outcome WW1 and WW2 had for them. They even want to sell their Eurofighters to Indonesia and use trainers for air police missions.

Yet Austria gets attacked in such a brutal way, by misery in human form.

Maybe after that, Austria will understand that you don’t negotiate with rats. You exterminate them. You don’t try to reason with them. You don’t try to understand them. You don’t try to correct them and you don’t try to integrate them back into society. You blow them up to tiny bits. Having links to terrorists/being a terrorist should be equivalent to a death sentence.

This is a take I don’t agree with. An eye for an eye and all that.

People will be bastards and you can’t eliminate an ideology. I feel like these things will happen regardless as to whether you start an eighteen year war or not.

Ideas can’t be killed, but people and organizations can. Nowadays, European terrorists like ETA and the IRA seem distant and reasonable next to ISIS. However, back then they were dealt with in the right way. You take out the leaders. After that you take out the known members. And after you take out suspects of being members. You do that again and again, until it’s clear that it’s not worth it to be a member of such organizations. Still, we will need most of the world to support such initiative. And I'm not convinced some countries of the world agree.

Trying to bomb countries back to the stone age when they are pretty much already there economically, politically, culturally and religiously isn’t going to solve anything.

You’re just gonna piss off more people.  Soft power is the way to go.

So.... how do you adjudicate who is and isn’t a member? The IRA seems like a good example to bring up. The Brits basically fought a low level simmering war with the IRA for decades . Did it really accomplish what you say it did? It seems like it only keep the war going. I suppose they could have attempted to kill all of the Irish Catholics in or near Northern Ireland. Is that the manner of response you are suggesting? I feel like this only leads to a dehumanizing of life that would have broad consequences for a society..

Also, speaking of terror attacks, the worst one that I’ve seen on my local news was also carried out with guns that civilians don’t have need of, police responded even faster than in Austria to kill the shooter and twice as many people died and were wounded. The difference? The shooter was a white guy from a Christian family and community who grew up in the area. How do you solve that problem?

In my opinion, re sponding to random violence with bigger random violence is not going to solve the problem, it will just make matters worse for everyone.

A war against terrorism doesn’t work. You can’t kill or subjugate a concept. As you said, ideas can’t be killed.

A war against ISIS does make sense. There is a clear-ish adversary where real objectives can be achieved.

War should not be allowed to be some nebulous and unending aggression without clear goals.

Should Austria start an aggressive anti-terror effort? I’m not really opposed. It would be better if the who and what a terrorist is could be defined.

“An eye for an eye” is a warning about consequences for your actions, not permission to retaliate.

In the New Testament, that notion is taken further :

But in Matthew (5:38-42) in the New Testament, Jesus repudiates even that notion. “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.”

Tangential , I find it hilarious we have two NATO countries possibly going to war.

It’s almost as if it’s obsolete and doesn’t serve any purpose, but encouraging US arms sales.
