Actually, this is why I’m not sold on OTA updates at all.  I can’t even imagine having to deal with this if it was a critical issue.

On the other hand, a (originally) British company supplies the designs that run 99% of the world’s cell phones.

I think any manufactuer with a dealer network is fooling to use OTAs.

Updates equal a trip to the dealership and a complimentary vehicle inspection, and that equals cash money for the service departments.

Doubly so considering most new cars sold make no profit for the dealer. All their money is from the service dept.

I mean even an OTA update that fails is no worse than having to go to the dealer for an update (assuming it doesn’t brick the vehicle).

I think that number may be high? Apple does  use the ARM ISA, but my understanding is that they aren’t actually using ARM’s designs. I think some other big players work similarly?

Fair enough. I was using “ design” in a broad sense, but you’re right that Apple has a license  to implement the ISA however it sees fit .

I work with Dev’s on a daily basis, I’m going to make sure that I do updates twice a year (also a reason I didn’t get the 4G internet connection).

The amount of times I’ve had to stop Devs from deploying something to production that would have brought down everything is why I’ll never try nightly OTA’s lol.

Case in point, this was an interaction today:
Dev: Our Jenkins builds are failing, could you please take a look?
Me: What do the logs say.
Dev: ...

Me looking the logs LITERALLY IN THE FUCKING BUILD OUTPUT: Looks like you have an expired cert in GCP, you just need to renew it and you’ll be good to go.
Dev: How do I do that?

FUCK!
