Technically I pay for and retrieve it tomorrow.
2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo (WJ) , 145k, straight 6 engine and Selec-Trac transfer case.
Will give my LJ the winter off, a well-earned respite after 200k miles.
Thanks to boredalways for spotting it and everyone else for putting up with this long quest.
Such a shame it’s white though. And an auto, but the transfer case satisfies some of my need for control.

Congrats!! I didn’t think this would happen. I thought it would be a multi year saga, like certain people shopping for T100’s or similar .
Super clean for 16 years old, I hope it keeps you going for a while!

Congratulations, Just Jeepin’!!! Just remember if you fall out of love with it, you can always flip for something else.
BTW, did you ever get around to checking out the one in Avon?
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:04 |

I dunno if it’s considered “basic” or not (if it is, whatever, I’d be happy), but if I bought a white jeep/bronco/ranger whatever. I would put mountain graphics down the side.
Based on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_Indiana maybe you can put a..... river? Field?

Nice get!

Congrats! I will kinda miss the Jeep shopping content but now we get more WJ content instead. Looks crazy clean too. Might want to use some armorall on that plastic though.

Not bad! I’ve thought about buying a beater to give Humdrum a chance to escape the salt....but I would have nowhere to store her out of
the weather anyway, nor really any driveway or lawn space to park her on
:(

Congratulations, I’m glad you finally found a Jeep you like!

Congrats on your purchase!
I’d love to find an old stick-shift Jeep myself, but unsurprisingly, people are trying to sell their rusty heaps for $2500.

WJ
is the best looking Grand Cherokee generation. Congrats on your new ride!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:30 |

Last year of the WJ, nice! That’ll be a sweet rig, very capable chassis and as you know, tons of aftermarket support. I like the interiors of these too. I remember a Chinese company making pretty clean aftermarket stereo to fit the rounded stock ~1.5 DIN opening. Looking forward to the build and upgrades on this thing!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:33 |

Nice!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:35 |

White does seem like a good canvas for something like that. Thanks for the idea.

Awesome, congrats!

Well, it’s not his yet ! The saga might continue !

Fingers crossed. I never sell a car, they always die of natural causes, so hopefully this has 5-10 years left to enjoy.

As musashi66 said, that is super clean for the age. Nice selection! Looking forward to seeing more of it
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:38 |

I did. Moderately rough, but the biggest concern was a groaning noise, reminded me of metal fatigue. Not sure what it was but didn’t want to risk it.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:39 |

I’ll probably still keep an eye out for interesting Jeeps and share them. It’s a tough habit to break.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:40 |
|
Yep. They know what they have.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:41 |

Probably lots of shots like this, just in white now.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:42 |

Indiana is flat. Like, so fucking flat. I lived in new orleans where the second biggest hill is a small man-made mound, and i still thought Indiana was flat when I lived there. Something about it makes it seem even flatter than it is ( until you go to Kansas and learn the truest meaning of the word).
But a river is a neat idea. The wabash?
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:42 |

Thanks for your help. Hopefully this at least takes the edge off for a while.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:42 |

Can’t blame you. Alright, now we all wait until you’ve pick it up tomorrow as well as an update after a week or so.

Every now and then I miss indiana. Not often, but every now and then. Nice shot
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:43 |

Need something . There is literally no WJ color I like less than white, sadly. Even black is better. Even grey .
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:44 |
|
That will not be me, I’m afraid. Maybe when it’s dying I might take it on an adventure like that but I doubt it.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:45 |
|
That’s a smart looking car. AFIAC, white is the only color except maybe silver. No, white.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:45 |

You are wrong, but I still care about you.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:45 |

Just popped up in Bloomington.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:45 |

So how much did you give for it?
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:48 |
|
I could try to use something like this to inform a decal...
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:49 |
|
Too much, but I got a 6 month power train warranty and a few hours of labor for a nagging problem on my LJ.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:50 |
|
I really need to find something to drop in there. Someone offers a single din CarPlay radio with a retractable screen.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:53 |
|
Oh man, that is literally my dream WJ.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:54 |
|
Either of these that I looked at locally would have made me much happier, aesthetically speaking.
Thanks for your help with my early search. Haven’t entirely given up hope on a manual XJ but I have nowhere to put it and no money to buy it so it’ll wait for now.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:55 |
|
Spoken like a true addict. But really, congrats, and keep your eyes peeled, I’m sure the perfect Cherokee will turn up one of these days.
Also, why didn’t you go for David Tracy’s “Holy Grail” jeep (manual ZJ) he found on the main page?
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:55 |
|
They’re a heck of a lot easier to find than manual XJs. That was a brutal search.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:56 |
|
That was pretty rough and the listing was quite old, so it didn’t seem worth the trouble.
IIRC both the roof and floor were rusting away.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:56 |
|
That thing looks crazy clean! Gotta admit Grand Cherokees are starting to look pretty appealing to me as I get older and my interests change. I find myself checking out newer models as a great family vehicle especially with their towing capability...but I don’t think I’m ready to go to that type of fuel economy unless I really have a strong need for it .
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:56 |
|
Sweet! I was just reading up on the NP242 TC (select-trac) and it seems like it operates in similar modes to mine with the exception that I can’t do 2hi. I guess as a consolation prize mine is gear driven, not chain driven and it has a viscous coupler over the center diff so its an LSD not an open in 4hiFT . Overall though it seems like an idea TC setup for daily driving and moderate wheeling.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:56 |
|
This how I imagine the previous owner last drove it. Not your Jeep in particular , but all J eeps.....
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:57 |
|
I would avoid retractable screens.

Congrats on another
Jööp!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:59 |
|
I think the white one looks much crisper with the contrast between the metal and the plastic panels.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 18:59 |
|
Moderate is as much wheeling as I ever do. I could maybe see myself turning one of my Jeeps into a more serious off-roader but I doubt it. I want the freedom to go anywhere, but crawling up a serious boulder or diving through a muddy pit aren’t my cup of tea.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:01 |
|
Thanks for the pointer.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:02 |
|
I have never seen one of these Jeeps that was 1 solid color. Condition looks amazing. The wheels even still have finish! Every Jeep/Dodge/Chrysl er of this era has destroyed and delaminating wheels around me...
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:03 |
|
Which reminds me I need to confirm what my official towing capacity is. The Wrangler can’t do squat but this actually has some chops.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:03 |
|
Yeah, the wheels aren’t in great shape but I never pay attention to them anyway.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:04 |
|
I think that was the one he bought, the one on the FP recently seemed to be in marginally better shape.
Regardless, I think you made the right choice here.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:08 |

Congrats on your find.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:16 |

In Serbia, they’d make you spit three times to ward off bad spirits that might make that happen.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:18 |

Looks really good for an old rig. Congratulations!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:20 |

Congratulations! On to the next quest!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:43 |

Congratulations, I’m glad you found something before the real cold sets in. You’re going to feel coddled this winter. Hopefully splitting the workload will help keep the gremlins at bay on both vehicles.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 19:45 |
|
The first time they’re both in the shop I’m going to feel like an idiot.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 20:31 |
|
Well Bought! So what is the story on the prior owner? Come on spill some dirt!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 20:40 |
|
Used car lot. I know, I know, but I got a warranty and they did a nice job tackling it s problem spots.
It was the first Jeep I looked at in a couple of months that wasn’t gushing oil.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 20:47 |
|
Time to get it wrapped some crazy color, it looks very clean though
![]() 11/02/2020 at 20:49 |
|
I did laugh when I saw my ski pass had an Indiana “mountain”, apparently there are some hills in the southern part of the state. Still it’s a bad sign when the trail map looks this flat:
~275ft change of elevation from the lodge at the “summ it” down to the river...
![]() 11/02/2020 at 20:55 |
|
As much as I’d like that, $$$.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 20:58 |
|
Horrible movie. I've seen it like 5 times!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:02 |
|
That looks Niiiiiiiice. I really like that off white color.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:04 |
|
What do they want for it?
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:05 |
|
The northern 60-70 %, yes. South of Indianapolis you get into some lovely rolling hills as you near the Ohio River..
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:06 |
|
Don't worry about the color. When buying used, what's there is there. You gotta prioritize physical and mechanical condition. Signed, guy with a pearl car and a silver car with gray cladding.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:08 |
|
No price yet, and heck without photos it’s probably a mis-labeled auto.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:10 |
|
I was thinking the same.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:13 |
|
Yeah, just checked the VIN and it’s an auto. Pfft.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:14 |
|
Careful, you might get winded up that high
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:16 |
|
Congrats!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:16 |
|
I got spoiled when I found a manual LJ in my dream color 20 minutes from home.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:19 |
|
Yeah, but that Jeep also might be cursed
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:19 |
|
I think that’s just the shade/gloom talking. If it’s not a pure white, it’s close enough to be indistinguishable.
Here’s a pic from a couple of days ago; still overcast, but a better view.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:20 |
|
Truer words...
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:25 |
|
Yep - I have a black car and a white car. I hate both colors, but you get what color they have when the important stuff matches in the price you're after.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:26 |
|
Looks good! That’s a good size suv and something I think is very lacking in today's market.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:28 |
|
Congrats!!!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 21:55 |

No problem with a used car lot car. I bought a 112,000 ‘94 Transport in ‘99. It was exactly as presented. It turns out it was owned by a brother of a freind. He drove 120 miles a day, traded it in and the lot got it from the dealer. Soooo what’s the dirt on this one?
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:09 |
|
Congrats! But what are we going to spend hours of our week reading about now? You were 20% of the content.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:14 |
|
Very nice.
I’m think overall you will probably be very happy with this 4 door vs a 2dr XJ.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:16 |
|
I’m sure someone will step up to the plate, and Dr. Z is never short on dreamy Toyota s.
Besides, I’ll probably still be posting about manual XJs once in a while. Or M715s that pop up on CL that I can’t realistically drive. Or...
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:18 |
|
I think so too. So much quieter than my LJ, so much more practical. Obviously so much more boring too, but sometimes boring is just fine.
Finally a vehicle I can use to commit a crime and not be so memorable!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:20 |
|
Still not bad. I also like the wheels
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:28 |
|
LMAO FINALLY!!!! CONGRATS!!!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:33 |

My grandparents had that spec and color. That thing was such a beast in the mountains in winter and also took us to Florida and back.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:46 |
|
I just checked, and it’s surprising how much larger the current Grand Cherokee is. About 8” longer, 4” wider, and 500-1600lbs heavier.
Curiously , the current Cherokee h as almost identical dimensions but way less cargo capacity, a round 15 cubic feet smaller. Safety standards? Crazy.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:46 |
|
Don’t think I’ll stop annoying y’all, so don’t get too excited.
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:48 |
|
That’s encouraging. How many people did it fit o n the long trips?
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:50 |
|
We had 5 but I was young and small so more like 4.5
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:53 |
|
Nice man!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:53 |
|
That’s about 3.5 more than I need, so that should work!
![]() 11/02/2020 at 22:55 |

I need to start untraining myself on the wave. Who’s going to wave back to a Grand Cherokee?
(Well, I wave to ‘em, but I won’t be waving to myself.)
