Online image because I didn’t have my phone with me, d’oh.
So my brother-in-law has had this S10 sitting in his driveway for a few years he’s been fixing up. During idle chit-chat over beers, I brought it up again. He’s owned many Chevy’s including six S10s, and I must irked his tater when I couldn’t tell him why this one was so special.
I was then enlightened to the truth: it was some super-obscure trim for 1984: the S10 Sport. His has only 60k miles and the interior is flawless and the bed is unused. Apparently worth big pennies to GM-fanbois. The short version as I gathered upon inspection was: power windows, power locks, power steering, air condition, 2.8L, 3-speed auto with overdrive (might have been able to order a manual? super rare) column shifter, “crystal” dashboard, locking center console, full gauges, cool wheels and fancier steering wheel. Best part of the interior are the bolstered seats. Other than a nice place to be, they out-Toyota Toyota’s older SR5 seats that said, uh, “SR5" 600,000 times.
That’s right, folks! It says “TRUCK” from neck to crotch down the center. Plus: brown! This is very antithetical to my usual experiences in S10s, even my ‘01 work Sonoma I drove for two years.
Anyway, it’s fun to learn.

I’d grant that the interior is in astonishingly good shape. Not GM’s strong suit there— but the chassis and drivetrain did acquit itself well. I’m always surprised to see SoCal landscapers using those 3 0-40 year old trucks reliably— especially as they all have to pass SMOG.

I’m not sure anything with the 2.8l should be called “sport”. I guess it’s sportier than an Iron Duke.

Certainly not anything NA. Also, while I’m an automatic apologist, I’m pretty sure a 3-speed slusher is still disqualifying.

I think this is one of those instances where a plaque needs to be made displaying how “rare” the 1980's shit box is compared to the other 100's of thousands of 1980's shit boxes that were made.

It probably depends on what it’s attached to. An LS5 454 hooked to a TH400 might qualify as sporty.

Yeah, but I like this stupid stuff. The 80s crap is my jam.

Those seats are everything

Well to me an S10 is just an S10, but dang if those seats aren’t cool though

A barge with low to mid 200's to the wheels?

3800lbs. is a barge? I’m not sure what dyno puts the LS5 at 250hp, it was rated at 390 ( and 500 ft.lbs) in the ‘Vette and the Chevelle engine was identical, but I guess I should have specified the LS6. Does that work?

Modern dynos put the LS6 at around 270whp(completely stock, I’m sure you could tune more out of it) , combined with archaic suspension and steering, I wouldn’t really consider it sporty.

Those are cool!
