So. Shelly apparently has another primary tumor. We are 5 weeks shy of the 3 year anniversary of her first diagnosis.
Good news is, it isn’t her initial cancer spreading and her other organs are also unaffected. It hasn’t metastasized, her lungs are fine, and the bone structure by the new tumor isn’t in terrible shape, all things considered.
Bad news, we obviously can’t amputate again, and the other two “curing” treatments are approximately $10k, which I can’t afford (and also, she’s 15, so that’s a rough calculation even if I was loaded). My fingers are crossed that this cancer is as non-aggressive as the first one, and we’re trying some medication and maybe palliative radiation for now.
In other short term bad news, I dropped her off on Monday at the kennel with just a tumor. I picked her up today and we went straight to her oncology appointment, only to discover she had a nasty abscess from a possible bite at the kennel. I called them and they said she was alone the whole time, but this implies otherwise.
So between the abscess, the tumor, and the IV bandage from her meds, we’re down to 0 weight-bearing legs. Hopefully the kennel comes up with some answers tomorrow because I’m kind of pissed but also too tired to deal with this.

Wow. Very sorry to hear that, rough all around.
A long-time c o-worker and friend of mine has been battling liver cancer, and was doing well enough to take a long family vacation over the last few weeks.
And now it’s back with a vengeance. He’s on an experimental treatment plan now, which is rarely a good sign.
Fuck cancer.

Well, shit. Poor pup. I wouldn’t be able to leave her side out of guilt
. Give her all the scritches.

Oh man, that’s rough.
If I could, I’d give both of you a big hug right now.
I hope things improve for the both of you soon and her cancer, well, I don’t know. I just hope she doesn’t suffer.
I’m afraid I can’t offer more than thoughts and hope.
Take care all of you.

Awe, poor Shelly!
And poor you. Caring for her in this state can't be fun.

I’m so sorry to hear that. We’re going thru kind of the same thing now. Sophie’s right front leg has a tumor that can’t be operated on, and it’s getting bigger. Right now she’s hanging in there, but she has a limp because of it.

Hope she feels better, too

Shit, I’m sorry to hear this. Best of luck to you and dog go.
Our old dog got bit at boarding, but they were great about it. Showed me the footage, paid for vet bills, banned the other dog. Hope you get the same

Poor doggo. I'm sorry. :(

For Shelly's sake, stay strong.

They’re tumor twins! She doesn’t seem too bothered by it but I’m pretty frustrated by the kennel thing. I need to trust that she has somewhere safe to stay when I have to work.

Ugh. Fuck cancer is right. I hope his new treatment is effective.

When I pressed them they said some of the girls sometimes feel like she’s lonely inside and may have let her out with the pack. Hoping to get some answers tomorrow. She loves the place and I don’t want to go psycho on them but she didn’t get a dog bite at home.

Oh my goodness those EARS!

Our doctor floated amputation, but I honestly think there’s zero chance she would be okay with it. She is one of those tough little dogs that won’t stop jumping on the furniture even when she’s hurt. I don’t trust that she won’t stop when we’re not at home.

If it helps , Shelly wasn’t slowed down at all by three legs. She climbs all over the “mountain” at the kennel and could still do steps and jump up onto the bed until she started getting arthritis . She adapted in about a week and it was like she’d never had four legs. To be fair, I think it’s a little easier when it’s a rear leg but I was shocked at how well she handled it.

If it were a rear leg, I wouldn’t even hesitate. But she’s so dense (mass wise) that I can’t see how she wouldn’t injure herself jumping off of the couch onto one leg. It’s my biggest fear.

Bad weeks for good dogs suck. Hope the treatments give some meaningful relief.

Seriously, no dog gets THAT by their own doing. Ridiculous... :(

We did a zoledronate IV today so I’ll report back on whether that helped. She’s also trying some CBD chews.

I’ll give them some credit, it didn’t burst until we got to the vet so they may not have seen it since it wasn’t oozing yet. But correct - there’s no way a crippled dog managed to do that to herself.

I’m so sorry. I lost a dog to leukemia. I hope Shelly comes through this one okay with affordable treatment. That kennel sounds like bullshit.
