Just had these come to mind. I quite like these old-ish cars.
First a VW Fox (smaller than the Polo, which is smaller than the Golf).
2010, VW Fox, 1.2, 55bhp, manual, £2,495.
Unpainted bum pers, steel wheels with wheel trims,
Hand wind windows,
cup holders in the rear.
Not a bad place to be.
VW Lupo (smaller than the Fox, which is smaller than the Polo, which is smaller than the Golf).
2001, VW Lupo, 1.6GTi, 125bhp, manual. £3,995.
Very nice for a 2001 very compact car.
Quite a large engine for such a small car.

I love both of those!

Saw a place yesterday in Tennessee. Beetles, Super Beetles, Mk. 1 “Rabbit” Golfs mostly - might have even have had a 411 or two. Must have been 30+ overall, maybe 40 .
Sadly, most not in very good shape, but that was probably as many VW products I’ve seen in one place outside a new car dealer.

A Passat is bigger than a Golf, which is bigger than a Polo, which is bigger than a Fox, which is bigger than a Lupo, which is bigger than a bike.

That little Lupo looks like it would be pedal to the metal fun! I drive an Abarth 500 with 160hp, so small cars that punch above their weight class speak to me.

Little cars of that period were great, quite basic, compact and some sporty options.

One has to ask, how many really small hatches VW thought they needed at the time?

I knew a guy at my previous job who had a Mars Red, VW Golf GTi. It was like a little go-kart on the up hill winding road coming out of Whitehaven harbour.
Sadly, some g*t stole it.
Just like this one.

I had an 01 Focus ZX3 and it while it is bigger than that Fo x it was one of the smaller cars sold here. It was seriously fun to drive, crank windows and everything. The only option she had was AC.
I miss cheap, honest cars. I also know that outside of Oppo not many others do.

Cheap honest manual window, petrol and manual gearbox have there places. We have this 2019, Dacia Sandero Access 1.0, 70bhp, 730miles on the clock for £6,000.
No radio though (the wiring is there)

IIRC the Fox and Lupo were not sold at the same time in Europe.

I’m okay with them doing it though.
I think the Fox was from another market but they offered them in the home market.

Are you sure about the last one? There are some big bikes out there.

I had a Mk1 Caddy “Rabbit Pickup” diesel myself for a while. Also Mars Red. A few Westmoreland factory build issues and some odd quirks (A/C compressor mounts working loose) didn’t stop me from driving it from... ~ 22 0,000 miles I think it was, up to 242,000. Would have been cracking with a GTI drivetrain, which I think is a popular thing to do.

Ye’, the VW Lupo/Seat Arosa was sold up to 2005-5, then the Fox was from 2006.

Just how bad is g*t in terms of a cuss word? I never really thought about it actually. I kind of figured it was a pretty mild insult but maybe not?

No radio? I think you could technically buy a 2010s VW Jetta sedan without a radio but I can’t think of a car I’ve seen without one past like 1970.

Fair point

I like that while there are fewer doing them, some still are even if they themselves may not be doing them soon .
Ford Fiesta ST-3
Toyota Yaris GRMN
VW Polo GTi
Suzuki Swift Sport
Kia Picanto GT-Line S
etc...

I would Lupo all the live long day.

I love how horrified that dash looks since the radio is gone.

I think it’s very low.
I t hink it’s, from low upwards, g*t, bast**d, toss*r, w*nker, ar*ehole, tw*t, c*nt.
But some still don’t like g*t. It’s not often used as it’s fell out of use.

I think some BMWs still have radios as cost options in that you choose and pay for what radio is fitted.
I know it was up until a few years ago at least as a customer said he had to spec the radio.

Polo GTi might be the closes thing to the original Golf Gti and it is a lovely motor.
That Toyota is pure sex, I am very interested in how the US model GRMN will look like.

I think it’d go like that clappers and be a joy to drive.
This one is a rarer Ravenna Blue, GTi with Recaro seats.

Finland didn’ t get either IIRC. Polo was our smallest VW. There’s a number of grey market import Lupos around though.

Ye’, a 197bhp, 2.0 motor in something more of a size the Mk2 Golf was,
Mk2 Golf GTi 137 bhp - 2020 Polo 196bhp - 2020 Golf GTi Moda 216bhp
Length 3,985mm - 3,976mm - 4,268mm,
Width 1,610mm - 1,901mm- 2,027mm,
Height 1,415mm - 1,462mm - 1,442mm,

The current Polo is almost exactly the same size as the Golf 4 :)
And the current GTi is about the same thing in term of weight and peak power and torque figures as a Golf 4 GTi with a stage 1 remap.

Cheers for that.
Mentally I had the Golf Mk4 as being bigger for some reason.
I do prefer the current Polo’ s over current Golf’s on size. Physically the Golf isn’t much larger but visually it is.

I had an 01 Focus ZX3 and it while it is bigger than that Fox it was one of the smaller cars sold here.
A Focus is 2 segments above though. The Focus is a compact, the Lupo and its replacement the Fox are not even subcompacts like the Fiesta , they are city cars like the Fiat 500 .

The first gen focus is about half the size of a last gen focus. I had one of each. The ZX3 was smaller than the last Fiesta and only a little larger than the current fiat 500.
But yeah I know the cars we get here are huge compared to europe and even more so now.
