This story is just terrible on multiple levels, but it really drives home how tenuous the concept of consent is when it comes to flying, especially flying internationally.

When people hold your freedom in their hands, who may be able to prevent you from making a wedding, or a job interview , or the bedside of a dying loved one, and demand you do outrageous things...when you’ve been traveling for hours in cramped conditions and simply want some rest...

Sounds like more a governmental overreach than anything done by the airline.

Agreed. That’s why the “constitution doesn’t really apply here” border zones in the U.S. are so problematic.

I love the business model - you pay upfront, they promise to make an effort to transport you from a to b. No guarantee of timely arrival, no guarantee of method of transport, no guarantee of arrival at all, no refunds - take a voucher to try again.

I refuse to travel to a few countries out of principal. Especially if their health system is basically run by T.I. and they can just inspect your reproductive organs like your his 20yr old daughter.

Yeah this is awful, and it really shows the culture difference. Here of course this would be a clear 4th amendment violation (though as Just Jeepin’ notes, we have some shitty court rulings regarding the applicability of the C onstitution when it comes to CBP’s operations).

Even if they were really going to try to hunt down this irresponsible mother (irresponsibility no doubt encouraged by Qatar’s crappy laws), it seems like it would be way better to just get a quick cheek swabs for DNA testing than to sexually assault these women on the tarmac. Sure the criminal might get away, but, if they really cared, they could try to extradite.

That was inexcusable on so many levels. Also, for a country, the first arab one, who allowed women the right to vote and hold office in equal to the men, to allow a forced ‘inspection’ of women, is truly showing the real social morality of the mid-east. Politically driven, and relaxed for convenience of that when ‘necessary.’ They support human rights and equal rights, unless they don’t like someone reporting the truth, or women deiving cars and doing things such as talking out of line for what they actually think, or someone who wasn’t born of a rich family so they must work in camps. Otherwise, equality for all!

I wouldn’t count on that when you see how bassackwards every ruling on drug testing has gone since the War on Drugs started . Being compelled to give someone (5th amendment , forced to testify against yourself) your urine (4th amendment, what’s more unreasonable than allowing someone to inspect the contents of your body) to get a job or just because the court said so? These right wing assholes wipe their ass on the Constitution whenever it’s convenient for them.

There’s a bunch of exceptions and carve outs to *some* Constitutional rights but the 2nd amendment? That’s the one no one can do anything about? FOH. I hate the hypocrisy of this country so fucking much.

That’s really quite an inaccurate mindset. The 2nd is severely restricted/eroded , far more than almost any other amendment. There is very heavy regulation of who can own, hoops to jump through to own, numerous ways they’re seized, ways to lose the right permanently, onerous paperwork & high taxes, restrictions on layout & features, magazine sizes, etc.

The problem, ultimately, is that we allow politicians to trample the constitution with impunity, creating laws that strip us of our guaranteed freedoms by a million cuts. The vast majority of laws are infringements on our rights because they’ve had very little to do for at least a hundred years.

The other problem is that people believe they can pick and choose which they restrict out of some belief or emotion that they have a moral high ground. If you let any, even ones that you dislike, get eroded, you’re just inviting others to do the same to the ones you think shouldn’t be. Keep that in mind when you point fingers.

So your position is that the 2nd Amendment has been severely restricted/eroded? My only response to that is what I’ve seen with my own eyes and that was going with one of my buddies to buy a handgun at Wal-Mart in Northern Virginia in the early-90's. We were in and out of the store in less than 20 minutes, the only “restriction” was that he couldn’t buy the gun and the bullets at the same time. So he handed me his credit card and I bought the bullets. I don’t know how much faster you’re supposed to be able to buy a murder machine.

what’s more unreasonable than al lowing someone to inspect the contents of your body) to get a job or just because the court said so?

You seem to be confusing a private corporation with the government. You even say in your comment, you’re allowing it. You have the freedom to say no, you can turn around and go home/about your life and nobody will stop you.

You seem to not understand that the government forces private corporations to conduct drug testing via policy and legislation.

You didn’t say anything about court mandated drug testing, is that OK with you?

Kinja'd!!!0

Can you cite the policy or legislation that forces private corporations to do drug testing?

Court mandated? Sure, since there’s a reason you were in court to begin with. Whether or not the things they’re testing for should be legal is an entirely different discussion, but punishment for breaking the law is still a thing as long as there are laws to break.
