Because everything is basically a fastback now, in order to get the trunk lid out of the way they have to use these huge awful arms. It’s terrible. Those things have like a two foot radius and take up half the trunk.

What was the one BMW did where the trunk was a liftback with a secondary hinge for a traditional trunk space? Maybe a dream...

I agree. I once damaged a newly framed painting with one of the swing down arms and that was not fun.

I mean, I’m sure they don’t need to have those huge awful arms, they use them because they are cheap. You could certainly do a strut arrangement instead.
Of course the best thing would to just make them hatchbacks instead.

Not sure about BMW but something like the Skoda twindoor maybe? Not sure if they have licensed it to anyone else or if there are similar designs out there.

I think that was the 5GT but my E39 uses a scissor hinge and strut arrangement that doesn’t eat up any cargo space at all.

Yeah, that’s the concept I was thinking of. It might have been a comparison of the 4 series Gran Coupe and 3 series trunks.

It does appear that in that instance the gooseneck hinges do lift it pretty substantially out of the way, but most instances they use them because they’re cheaper.

When I’m king, all fastback sedans will actually be liftbacks.
Today is one of those days that I miss this car.

It does cut down on space. At least most everyone now has them recessed into their little holes like that. Older ones, you could pack your trunk and then have an unpleasant crunch when you close it and the arm squishes something.

It was the 5 Series Gran Turismo

invest in better looking linkages... maybe by buying a VW
I’ll buy a Phaeton someday just to gaze at these works of art.

I’ll be honest, I’d rather have the Š koda over the BMW:

Yes that’s it!
I think one of my first Oppo posts was about the joke of a trunk that the convertible PT Cruiser has. Same as my Cabriolet and the later Cabrio, like the lower one the first pic.

One of the many things I like about my Volt is that it’s a hatch.

Hell yea! I had no idea!

Both my E9Xs are that way, I can actually fit a lot of things in the M3.

My E92 had a couple struts on either side of the trunk opening. They didn’t lift the trunk very quickly but didn’t eat into trunk space. I actually replaced them thinking they were old and worn out, and the fresh struts were barely an improvement. They were cheap, whatever.
My Si has gooseneck hinges and a fastback-ish roofline but the trunk is pretty tall so I guess the hinges don’t need to be super huge.

Will confess, I have an irrational liking towards these things. Just look at that weird ass butt opening. And they come in 550i form...reliability is a huge concern on that thing, but still a silly amount of power in a weird car, something to like about that combination.

The liftback and hatchback design makes life and using the boot space so much easier.
Take the Ford Mondeo, available as a saloon, liftback and estate. Access to the saloons boot space is limited and trying to use the added space after putting the rear seats down, is still limited in the size of the aperture of the saloon.
Where as the aperture of the liftback versions makes utilising the full boot space so much easier.
oF the fourth gen Mondeos, 2012 onwards, on Autotrader U.K.
82 are saloons,
399 are estates and
869 are liftbacks.
Even then it’s because the hybrid only came in saloon (56) and estate (21), the numbers of saloons would be less if the hybrid came in a liftback design.
