Well, you don’t see this every day. This owner took a WJ GC Limited and gave it some tasty mods. It’s got a leather interior, a semi two-toned paint/plasti-dip scheme, a 4.7L V8, Quadra-Trac II, a front crash bar (were a nice Warn wrench could sit), and plenty of space where one could sit in relative comfort — away from the elements when you need a change of pace. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
Personally, I think this is an ideal second vehicle — something to have fun in. It won’t meet most of your wants while giving you plenty of your needs when your main vehicle just won’t or can’t do. Need something fixed on it? Used/Reman/aftermarket parts are cheap and plentiful. And the price makes it just that much easier. Something else to consider for the money: you’re unlikely to lose much money if you decide to sell it.
I guess the only strike that I can think of is the engine. This was the first model year of the use of the 4.7. Most of the horror stories surrounding this engine failing after 70k miles are mainly due to poor service maintenance. This one is listed with 130k on the odo, so there is a good chance it was well maintained. Is it enough to make you want to run away? Maybe. Considering what I might use it for, it’s probably no big deal. If it had to be my main mode of transportation, I would have to think long and hard about it...as I’m wishing I could find a ZJ with a 5.2L and with similar features.
Anyway, the ad is still up (a shame that the only way to contact the seller is via Craigslist AFAIK).

It sure is tempting, but I’ve never taken up offroading...yet. So I hope an enthusiast snags this up!
For me, having another cheap ZJ just for hauling stuff might be enough.

I’m trying to find a Jeep with selectable 4wd so I don’t have to wait for it to decide when to activate the front wheels...but that is a tempting package.

Wrong engine and transfer case. I’m hoping to find a 4.0L because they usually have a longer life, and that doesn’t have the Selec-Trac with part-time 4wd.
It’s very frustrating because the transfer case is almost never available in t he description, and certainly isn’t something you can filter on, so every one I find I have to click through the photos (or grab the build sheet if the photos suck but the VIN is available).
It’s tempting to get the older ZJ instead, because all of them had the simpler, more desirable (to me) transfer case, and the v8 doesn’t have the same reputation for fragility as the 4.7L in the WJs (plus the 4.0 was also available for ZJs).
Basically, I just need to either buy something or shut up about it, because I’m starting to bore even myself with all of this.

I haven’t heard the same concerns about the 5.2 as I have the 4.7. A V8 is tempting just because I’ve never had one.

Wow, that is a sad, sad Jeep, and a testimonial to how they’ll usually keep running even when everything’s broken.

The 5.2 and 5.9 V8s are more thirsty than the 4.7 , the fuel economy of the 5.9 in my Dakota R/T was abysmal.
EPA says 22 mpg hwy and 15 ci ty for 1998 WJ 4x4 & 5.2 V8, which seems very close to the 4.0.

I get about 13 combined with the terrible aerodynamics and off-road gearing on my LJ, so I’m confident I can live with whatever a ZJ or WJ gives me.

The 5.9 in my Dakota R/T was EPA rated at 18 hwy and 13 city. I averaged close to city mpg with mostly hwy driving. So 15 mpg might be all the 5.2 will offer.
My Comanche 4x4, 4.0 with 5 speed manual averaged close to 19 mpg with mostly highway driving. Long road trips saw 25 mpg.

Definitely not a stand out color combo, but sometimes that may be j ust as well. A test drive should help determine if you and a WJ are compatible. Hoping it all goes well on Monday.

I remem ber going on a test drive with a friend who was looking to purchase a Trooper RS being sold at the local Acura dealer . My friend wanted to test the 4x4 system, so the salesman pointed him to the nearest railroad tracks. He had told my friend to engage the 4wd as we approached a 3-4 ft climb to the railroad bed. The Trooper climbed up the hill and we drove onto the tracks. W e traveled on the tracks for a short distance, when off in the distance a train horn could be heard. We determined this was a solid warning to get off the tracks pronto. As the T rooper crossed the rails to head down the hill it began to sink into very deep gravel. We sunk in all the way to the frame. Four low was engaged and some rocking necessary, but we got out moments before the train arrived.
I used this incident to help my friend score a decent deal on his Trooper, basically blackmailing the salesman. I told him that I would tell his manager that he almost killed us if he didn’t agree to my friend’s offer.

Yep. I’m not sure I could bring myself to spend the money to do that, although I’d pay more for a Jeep of the right color, so rational decision-making isn’t exactly my strong suit.
