What would be better for the environment ?
A: Tomorrow, everyone in the US had a brand new electric car
B: Tomorrow, everyone in the US actually respected the “left lane is the fast lane” and stopped tailgating, which would reduce the amount of braking used causing there to be much fewer traffic slowdowns .
Discuss.

B. N
o facts to back anything up or belief that it would help
.
I just want that.

A: because I am assuming a population decrease from current 7+ billion down to the same number of electric cars that currently exist.

I support this but only if it’s like musical chairs and there’s a mad dash to claim an EV as your own.... GO!

We all want that.

its more like the Christian rapture. If you are sitting in your EV at the time of the rapture you live. If not, you die. Nothing but a pile of clothes left behind.

B, because A would massively overtax the existing power grid and require the construction of hundreds of new fossil fuel power plants in order to meet the demand in the shortest timespan possible. Energy’s gotta come from somewhere and solar/wind/hydro/nuclear are all very expensive and time-consuming
to build at industrial scale.

Interesting thought exercise. If everyone suddenly had an electric car our power grid would fail spectacularly given pre-pandemic commutes. But given the higher number of people working from home now, peak demand might be lessened due to people not needing to charge every night. Still, peak demand might shift toward evening meaning more expensive power for charging. It might also mean that since solar and wind are more available in the daytime the demand on natural gas generators might be increased.
I think somebody smarter than me needs to figure that one out.

Oh then no, I do not support this. How about everyone who is currently sitting in an EV gets raptured and the rest of us just have to live on this shitty Earth? Albeit with a couple hundred thousand less people...

I don’t own an EV.... I still support this.
Wouldn’t have to put up with any of this bullshit anymore...

Just build nuclear powered carbon capture lol

Imagine not just teleporting the carbon dioxide to Mars to create an atmosphere on it lmao.

We really need to be shooting greenhouse gases from Venus to Mars. I’m sure we can make it happen!

Probably A . (ignoring supply problems associated with instantly replacing hundreds of millions of ICE engines with power from the grid). Rationale: all that stupid stop and go driving would be more efficient with regenerative braking anyway. Still suboptimal efficiency, and still super annoying, but still vastly better than where we are, on top of the other advantages.

A: because tomorrow everyone would be trying to charge their new cars which will overload your grids and bring them crashing down never to rise again, civil strife would break out, millions will die in the cross fire, excessive consumption will be curtailed, the righteous Christian warlords will take over and the peasants will be pushed into their place...and kept there. Without so many mouths to feed and the new drive to keep in eye on everybody, the great outdoors will be abandoned and the rewilding will commence...
