Do they ever really?

My stepbrother bought one, same color and all, from the elderly original owner with under 60k miles.  He paid $500 dollars for it, and drove it throughout his college years.

My 2001 Golf wore out, but it never stopped running.

Yes please. First car I ever drove was my dad’s 86 Rabbit. I loved that car. It wasn’t fast, but it had a 4-speed and was a blast to drive.

Rust and wrecks are about the only thing that will kill an old school watercooled, pre-computers anyways.

The 1.6 IDI diesels in particular. Just change fluids, belts, and wear items, prevent rust from happening, and don’t crash, and they don’t die- there’s a handful of people in the Mk1 pages who’ve put over 500k miles on their diesels. Crazy.

I have to admit that the mk2 Golf I had have seemed indestructible as well. Apart from normal wear items and minor rust.

Mothballed in 2013 with close to 300k km, want to turn it into an electric at some point. I’m sure the 54 hp 1.3L engine is still fine after a thorough service, but why would I do that?

300k km is nothing. The 97 Jetta I parted out and scrapped had 275k miles (442.5k km) and still ran like a champ. Rusted to hell and leaked oil etc, but it ran and drove. I still see cars of that spec (2.0 8v, 5 speed) for sale from time to time with more than 300k miles. (How I know: the digital odometer has a label that says “total” on it. When you pass 300k, that “total” turns off- record so far was 463k miles.)

I know. It was ready for a lot more. It was in perfectly fine condition and a piece of family history as it was bought new by my grandfather who died in 1993 , but I wanted something more comfortable and faster. Remember, 54 hp. The economical value was nothing. That’s why I mothballed it.

My daily driver has 376k km on it. Which is still not a gazillion, but it is running at 4k+ rpm on the German Autobahn all the time. That too is ready for a lot more, but it’s not a VW.

Mine was the 2-point-slow. And I wasn’t even that diligent about routine maintenance. It just kept running. When it was finally totaled in front of my house by a drunk driver , it had 224k miles on the clock and was still on the original clutch.

Where does it sit? Just living in a garage or something?

Oh yeah. I’m familiar with what happened there. Always sad to read.

Something like that. In some kind of big former-agricultural building where they store camper vans and trailers during winter.

You should pull it out. Do you go and start it every once in a while? They’re good cars if slow and they stay running, but only if you run them... they don’t love sitting.

It has not been started since I drove it there, over 7 years ago .

I live in a apartment building. And, currently 900 km away as I’ve emigrated since. I’m not planning on bringing the 1.3L lump back to life. I am taking the full electric swap seriously though. Something like a Nissan Leaf power train. It merely has to wait a few years longer.

There’s a guy doing an electric Caddy in England I think. I used to follow his Instagram, but I’ve since lost it.

And yet my well maintained 2013 GTI required several  multi-thousand dollar repairs before I ditched it when the timing chain jumped at just 80k.

More than 8 valves was a mistake.
