This.

Kinja'd!!!

1999 f150 short bed, flareside, 5 speed manual transmission, 4.6 Triton V8. Runs and shifts good. Manual windows and locks. New rear window, fuel pump, coolant. Paint needs work. Dash is cracked but a replacement is included. Pioneer stereo is included but not mounted. Tires have dry rot but roll smooth. Could be a lightning clone! 225xxx miles. $2900 or best offer!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Lacks the blown 5.4, but has a clutch pedal. BYOB(lower) and this thing will decimate all... ok maybe not but it’ll be fun as hell, with or without forced induction! Plus it’s a fraction of the cost of a running/driving Lightning.

I had a friend that owned a 2nd gen lightning and that thing was an absolute hoot to drive. He chewed through tires and gas like nobody’s business. His was bright red and would do 135 on the highway after a few mods.

He spent a few nights in jail from attempting to run from the police in it and lost his license once or twice.  He traded it on a bright yellow evo 9 that was almost as fast but was way better on gas.

It would definitely be more expensive by the time you got it to the states even if it were 25 years old. I've looked and no one in the US imports Aussie Utes. I really want one but they just don't exist here.

I’m not really a fan of the look of modern step-side beds. But I do think Ford did better with them than GM did.

In addition to the engine, this lacks the Lightning’s nifty side-exit exhaust. Though adding that is probably a lot easier than giving the engine more power.

Or you could have this rusty long bed 5.4 auto for 1/3 the price! ;)

Yeah but those are converted Chevy SS ones. I’m talking about a proper Aussie Rules ute with steering wheel in a slightly inconvenient spot.

Kinja'd!!!

I mean I probably couldn’t get an HSV Maloo in my budget but I think those 90s Holden utes are quite sharp looking even in lower spec.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Or you could go a little earlier and get one of the long lasting previous gens.

Kinja'd!!!

Mmmmmmmm, ute.

Wait, which was sarcasm?

Anyway, no, I genuinely have no context for sport trucks. I didn’t know they were a thing until, well, now.

Nope, I love manuals but not in a truck. Unless it’s a weekend toy, but I’d rather have a 1st gen Lightning (drove one a bunch). Daily manual car is awesome. Truck, give me big power and a good auto. I daily a 15 F150 Lariat SCAB 3.5EB. Sorry, revoke my oppo card.

T o be fair, a flareside short bed basically is a car

The Left Hand Utes are indeed actual Holden utes that have been imported and converted to LHD using the LHD components that Holden used to make the Chevy SS.

If you wait the 25 years...they either won’t exist or they’ll be so expensive down here that you’ll never be able to afford them.

A good running HQ is a 10 grand car down here and a properly sorted original-ish one could be three times that. My mechanic is restoring a couple (one ute and one a cab chassis) for clients as we speak... amongst the other usual sedans, wagons and coupes

I like it but I’d check behind the front bumper as it doesn’t match since it’s got the tan plastic like my 01  expedition Eddie Bauer had.

Yup, it’s for those people who think... how can we take a truck with a short bed and make it even less useful?

...says the guy who took a Dakota RT that was already lowered and lowered it some more.... but I’d argue in my case the short bed, smaller truck and now lower loading height actually improved the usefulness of the truck.

I’d much rather load and unload cargo out of my truck vs our job site F-150s where you need a stepladder to reach the top of the bedsides.

It’s hard for us life long car enthusiasts to remember that some people come to this illness/ interest later in life, and haven’t obsessed about every vroom-vroom option ever.

The second gen Lightning is a dream truck, but honestly I’ve thought about picking one of these base models up and building it instead of buying the real deal. The Lightning body kits are available, and it leaves me open to swap in a Coyote, six speed, four link etc etc. All the looks and more performance without having to modify, or pay up for an original Lightning.

I guess I had never really paid too much attention to that. Fascinating. It’s impressive that they actually got it to work and they didn’t get greedy like the US Nissan Skyline GTR importation scheme that ended up with a handful grandfathered in. No wonder they are so expensive though. It’s pretty much exclusively the last gens converted by LHU in the US.

I’ m shocked no one has really imported any older ones though through the usual channels. With Holden dead and no longer making Utes they are going to hold their value really well. Sniff. I really want a ute but I won’t be able to afford their crazy prices!

Obviously when importing something to a place where there is no existing parts network you want to get as good of an example as you can. I love the HQ but those seem to still be mighty expensive too. Sigh.

cracks knuckles.. . welcome to the world of Pickup_man, sport trucks are my jam and my favorite of all trucks. If you feel like going down a rabbit hole here’s a list to get you started.

64-65 Dodge Custom Sport Special Pickup

Dodge Lil’ Red Express

Dodge Midnight Express

Ford Lightning, 1st and 2nd gen

Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition (certain years qualify more than others, some were basically a crew cab Lightning)

Ford F-150 Tremor (one suspension package away from greatness)

Chevy 454SS

GMC Typhoon and Cyclone

Chevy S10 Xtreme and Blazer Xtreme (no added power , but these are %100 sport trucks, just slow ish ones, and very of the age of early 2000's)

Dodge Ram SRT10, reg cab and double cab

Dodge Dakota R/ T

Toyota Tacoma X-Runner

Then of course there’s the on OEM specials, the Shelby F-150's, the Hennessey trucks, Saleen F-150's, Lingenfelter Chevy’s etc. etc.
