I don't know a whole lot... but that strikes me as a fairly deep, fast flowing river. Who thought it was a good idea to drive across it without being in anything short of an amphibious vehicle?

Apparently the locals do routinely ford it, but it’s an alpine river and it’s springtime here: the depth can change pretty fast. Also, the video doesn’t start when they drive in but only when they’re already in trouble, so we don’t see how deep it was where they * tried* to ford . So while it was obviously a bad call, it may not have been as dumb as it looks .

Flash floods are a very real thing, but I’m going with Occam’s razor here.

I thought we all floated down here?

Fair enough.
I’m also probably a chicken, and would first
try walking across it (with a walking stick), unless I saw someone else first drive across it.
This may or may not be me, having walked half way across a very wide river. (We didn’t go more than half way across, as the deep bit was on the far side. As it was, this was probably 100+ m from the shore.

“ and would first try walking across it”.
You’re a braver man than me then. Somethi ng moving that fast I wouldn’t be trying on foo t if it was more than knee deep, pole or no pole.

I wasn’t really thinking flash flood, more along the lines of an “ I cro ssed it this mo rn ing and it was fine, so it should be fine now ” type failure to engage brain. From my experience hiking in that area when I was younger and stupider fitter, flash flo ods aren’t really a thing round there. You’ll often see big cha n ges in river depth over a period of hours, but not over minutes.

When you’re not burning. Or maybe even when you are.

That's the point - if you can't walk across it, you probably shouldn't drive across it.

I wouldn’t be. But then I’m a chicken too :-).
