Base model 8GC is rather nice... But I can't help but agree with Stef

BMW’s diesel inline 6 motors are apparently quite stout. Twin- or triple-turbocharged and with intense amounts of torque. Responsive to tuning too.

The E90 335d was the last USDM inline 6 diesel BMW that isn’t an X5. They can be had in decent condition for around $9-12k and are major sleepers. Also, like the new 5-series in Stef’s review, they look nice.

Very much so.

The 540d was offered stateside  long after the E90 went away. They make fun noises, too. Overall, I’d rather just have the gas engine, though.

The M550d has 4 turbos but i believe that it will be discontinued last year for emission reasons.

BMW diesels are known to be good and fairly reliable (more than their petrol engines).

And the inline-6 configuration suits well with diesels

I have never felt like a BMW was for me when I have sat in them, don’t know why. I would get a new Volvo AWD waggo if I could.

I'm not going to disagree with her take because it is only a BMW after all...and one that looks strangely like a Skoda Superb too.

This is first 5-er in a long time that doesn’t invoke a gag reflex.

But, if I cared, I’d finally get an engine in the E39 IT (estate) sitting here in the shop.

Is that a hit take? Seems pretty obvious when you look at their current monstrosities .

It’s possible that the best looking new BMW has always been the 5 series touring . The 5 is always one of the lookers of the range, and the wags is always better.

I had one. Absolute nightmare reliability wise for me. I currently have a 140k mile X1 that I’ve been maintaining myself, and had restored a previously non running ‘ 83 325e when I owned the 335d, so I’m no slouch when it comes to bimmer repairs.

Got a whole new intake, EGR cooler, turbo seals, plus a bunch of other sensors replaced at around 35k miles. This had to be all piecemealed together as they couldn’t figure out why I kept throwing codes.   I also needed to have the head walnut blasted on account of carbon build up. Came out to around $10k or so in warranty work in the eight months or so I owned it. The tech told me they see it with most every 335d, and recommended that I fill it with “premium” diesel at a nearby Shell. No idea if that would actually help

Think I paid $20k for my ‘11 in 2013, so no way would I pay anywhere near $10k for one now knowing the issues they have. Very fun to drive, but the engine seemed to be of poor quality. The turbo intake hoses were cheap hard plastic instead of rubber or silicone to give you an idea of some of the shit they used on that car. The 400+ torques in a sub 4k lb car and 30+ mpg was fun, though.

Better to look like a Skoda than to look like a gopro shot of an ENT doing a nasal exam..

Pity they are being chased out of the market...

Very worried about "Cash For Oil Burners" from the GND crowd next Congress.

Fascinated by the Audi too. Hardly ever see one.

The A6 3.0 TDI, I take it you mean? Also offered until very recently. The Dieselgate dip was *the* time to get one but likewise I don’t see why you wouldn’t just get a 3.0T. Probably why they’re so  rare.

A8 actually but same motor I think.

A6 Avant TDI would be awesome but...

Nah, the E60 and derivatives never did much for me. I do still have that E39 wagon roller I posted awhile back— and even in that generation always hated the rear-angle views of the sedan.... just “ugh” for me. B ut the wagon was a completely different story. I think it’s a very well proportioned car.

Not unlike how the Sporting Estate-Wago version of the Panamera completely changed the Fugly Hunchback character of the Gen I sedan. Which was and is a helluva four-door, but also incredibly hideous.
