Don’t say that to the “Breast is Best, keep your voodoo vaccinations away from my kid crowd. ” They will quickly inform you that if you stuck a kid on a guy’s nipple that he could start producing milk. It might take a day or two though. 

I have no clue if it is true or not, but I’ve been informed about it more than once. I’m never going to personally test it out either.

My wife is a hippy. Homebirth, breast is best...etc. We vaccinate our kids, but actually research the vaccines we give them.

I’ve heard and seen what you’re referring to. My guess is that some hormone therapy, or an out of whack endocrine system is to blame for male lactation. No thanks!

I hope you didn’t take offense -t he homebirth crowd, and Breast is best crowd is fine (and good) . As is the researching and doing due diligence before vaccinating. I am for informed parenting, and not just accepting the word of the medical establishment. The  doctor who refuses to admit medicine has advanced since he started practicing is always dangerous.

It’s the “ all vaccines are some form of government control, use this natural oil for that gangrene, and I’m not going to the doctor even if my kid has a 107 degree fever” extreme crowd that I’ve had mention the ‘you could breast feed your child if it comes to it” thing. I still cring.

No offense taken. I’ve definitely come in contact with people like that. I have a health sciences degree, so I do what I can to help educate people I know. My sister is also a hippy (two home births, only breastfed her kids ), but she’s also a nurse and will have her doctorate in nurse practitioning by the end of the year. She operates in both worlds.

There’s a lot of screwed up stuff that the medical community has done with the blessing of governments, to women, so I can understand where the skepticism comes from. There are a lot of legitimate concerns, but the internet has allowed a lot of the less legitimate concerns to gain traction.

I know some herbalists that have studied with indigenous elders, and there’s quite a bit of knowledge there that shou ldn’t be discounted. A big issue with their natural remedies is that a lot of currently prevalent diseases were brought over by Europeans, so knowledge on how to combat them isn’t as developed. They also take a lot longer to work on account of natural concentrations of chemicals being lower.

I’m currently taking a course on tribal environmental regulations, and a big issue in South America involves pharma companies using indigenous knowledge to find plants that have therapeutic properties. These companies then pillage the jungle, isolate the compounds, and create pharmaceuticals . Much of this is done without kicking any support back to the people who had the knowledge of these compounds to begin with.

I know its uncouth right now to criticize the medical industry, but it’s not all rainbows and unicorn farts.
