Today’s Election Day in New Zealand. If you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain about the gummint later: them’s the rules.

Ours is going to be much less controversial than the US one - it’s obvious who’s going to win, it’s just a question of by how much. There’s been over 50% advance voting, which is being counted right now and will be published as soon as the polls close, so we’ll basically know the outcome by ten past seven

It’s a joke that’s been made a few times before: I do this a lot . The natural way for me to hold the phone results in a photo that’s upside down according to Kinja. There’s something about the way an iPhone handles EXIF data which means even if I rotate it, Kinja just rotates it back. So if I forget and hold the phone the wrong way, I have to rotate the photo then delete the EXIF data before uploading. Which I can do on my PC but not on the phone...

That’s probably the most interesting question of the day. Polls say no, but he’s a “r eturn from the dead” specialist, and he always beats the polls because people are embarrassed to say they vote for him.

I’m not sure which I’d prefer - I disapprove strongly of his policies, but he’s an entertaining old bugger: politics here will be less interesting without him. If he doesn’t get in,  that’ll be the end of the NZ First Party : he’s too old to try again and they’ve got no successor lined up, Shane Jones has shown he can’t cut it.

My kid just moved into an off-campus apartment near his University here in the Independent Republica Californioso.

His new mailbox is inundated with the “ballots they just sent out” for every single SOB that’s lived in that apartment in the last 20 years... What could go wrong, when nobody ever cleans up the databases?

This is why we have Electoral Commission’s (independent government agencies) at both the state and Federal level in Oz . You only have to enrol to vote once in your life and they’ll chase  you around everytime you change address...
