you want a ute, but most manufacturers wont give you a ute, but amazingly you won a contest at a local body shop that will take a vehicle of you choosing and turn it into a ute. What do you pick?

A Odyssey or CR-V or something, common and you could probably get an older one for not a lot of money and beat the crap out if and you could still get parts.

Mmmmmm, yes!
But realistically I want a muscle car ute. Something like this! Though if I’m being honest I’d ask for a shooting brake instead.

First generation Porsche Panamera.
For all I know it seems to be a good car, but it’s ruined by ungainly proportions. So why not get rid of that ugl

Turns out others were thinking in the same direction. So something like this

Easy.
T o be honest though, the Opala almost got a Camino version between 1974 and 1975.
It was nicknamed Opalete by the press and was supposed to be released in 1974, however since the Opala line was going to be restyled in 1975 and the Caravan station wagon was already on its way, Chevrolet decided to mature the idea a little longer, which resulted in an actual, post facelift, prototype
Supposedly, the final model would feature longer doors, windows and a slanted b pillar, similar to the actual El Camino, but Chevrolet gave up on it due to cost and fear of cannibalizing the C series consumer base. This is probably the coolest Ute that never was though.

Honestly, it’s time for an EV ute.
Hear me out on this, they are already basically flat floor chassis with a low profile motor and all the driver/charger circuitry under the hood. So what is stopping them from just making a flat area behind the front seats all the way back?
![]() 10/16/2020 at 19:19 |

Man, h ard choice! Utes are such a rare sight in the wild that I don’t know where I’d even start if I had the chance to ute-ify something. I’d love to see a ute version of... well... everything !

Eerything should be offered as either sure or shooting brake

I’m going to assume you meant Ute there and that is indeed a world I’d like to live in. Except everything is offered as both a ute and a shooting brake.

Quite a bit actually. Very few platforms are engineered to be sufficiently rigid on their own. They need a body over them (and in quite a few cases, front and rear glass) to be stiff enough to cope with engine inputs, suspension inputs and basic physics. Utes don’t really have bodies - past the b pillar there’s generally bugger all body to give stiffness to the floorpan.
Holden got around this with the last ute by shortening the entire platform (cutting it off at the B pillar), creating a new rear wall for the cab then hanging
a entirely new rear chassis section off that wall.
To get an EV sedan platform to work as a ute it would need to be engineered like a skateboard...and no-one has got anything like this to market...yet. Despite numerous concepts over the last couple of decades.
