This just ran in Scientific American. In a year sullied by the mis-use of science to advance the quest for political gain and clicks, I guess I find this deeply depressing. YMMV.
Whatever the truth here, I’m gonna wager that the Over-Under on it isn’t “50". But it’s 100% Clickbait.

This follows the Jack Reacher school of probability.
The options are either “Yes” or “No”, so the probability is 50/50.

Yeah but it doesn’t really matter, now does it?
![]() 10/15/2020 at 10:42 |

Oh, it absolutely does matter because it advances a Trumpian-Inverse- Schroedinger theory of “It’s whatever I say it is...”

Scientific American? More like Philosophic American.

Yeah. Exactly. I’m like “WTF happened to Scientific American????”

I’ve heard about a theory that the more we understand and know about the universe operates, the greater the chance that we are living in a simulation.

Nice to know there is another fine literature buff on the site. Not everyone appreciates the subtle nuance of a finely crafted Lee Child novel.

I dunno. That feels more like Computer Science Majors “projecting” their view of the world....
If you go down the path of “it’s contrived” I gotta think whatever they’re simulating? Is probably not worth the bother. I guess that’s the nihilistic view.

Without philosophy, would there be science?
![]() 10/15/2020 at 11:13 |

A philosophy professor of mine shared the idea that to find out if we’re living in a simulation is based on the assumption that whomever / whatever created said simulation would allow us the tools to figure that out. Which is ...a bold assumption.
Reverse-engineering a simulation based on only what you can perceive from within said simulation is inherently futile.

This is my favorite theory behind the “meaning of life” or whatever. I don’t believe it, but its my favorite one to chat about.

Same thing that happened to TLC “The Learning Channel”, Discovery, History Channel, Popular Mechanics magazine...etc.

Sound like the author got high while watching the pot smoking scene in Animal House.

Could be. If it is a simulation, how were the simulators created? Maybe it’s all dream within a simulation?

Not everyone appreciates the subtle nuance of a finely crafted pen mug, either. But I do.

This part of the shelves really radiates class. That’s an old brass spitting above the Lee Child tomes, and below is a picture of the planter I have. It’s a Toto urinal as I strive to have only the best.

I find it sad... another information source.... that you can’t depend on.
Hell, even PBS and NPR have run with some crazy-ass stuff in the last three years.

Even BBC news, which I would say is the “Gold Standard” of journalism, is more clickbaity and shit these days.
It’s the end of the world man.

Yeah, I’m kinda down to thinking “Life just exists to gaslight us all into oblivion.”
My best source of what’s going on in the world is OPPO.

And, just for the record, that’s BY FAR, my favorite R&M episode. The sheer density of gags, references and sly nods goes far, far beyond a dipping sauce. It’s a work of pure genius, start to finish. Plus, Shoney’s finally gets some respect.

I need a new graphics chip. Object detail distance won’t go up. Also I overheat when running too many processes.

It’s a better strategy than you think . Getting news from channels not meant for distributing news is a pretty good filter for BS that doesn’t matter, since only things people actually think are important will get discussed.
Obviously there’s a problem with that last part, but it’s better than just taking anything some blogger posts at face value.
![]() 10/15/2020 at 15:37 |

It’s also a great recipe for self-referential BS being accepted as fact-- “since it fits what I already think to be true”.

Might have been true some time ago, but nowadays “journalists” are just as, if not more, guilty of that then the average person.
