Maybe we don’t have flying cars or Mr. Fusion reactors, and the ICE is fast becoming the automotive equivalent of 3-day old leftovers or that guy who farts in elevators , but car lovers may have reason to rejoice. Modular electric chassis design could allow for boutique manufacturers to thrive again:

Can I have a ‘67 AC Cobra or maybe a 1930’s Bugatti on an EV platform? Please?

It will be interesting to see how quickly we will see 3D printing for carbon bodywork etc.. If they can dream it up they can just print you the car within some kind of parameters so it fits with everything.

I'll take a replica LMP.

I’m ready for Star Trek replicators- but instead of ordering hot  tea I want a Ferrari 330 and a Defender, no milk or sugar.

I’ve been ready for that since TNG came out, yeah some crazy stuff could be a lot easier, Leno has had some unobtanium parts made but it’s still not cheap.

Would there be an issue with crash testing on those?

The problem is how do they get them to pass current safety requirements.

I love the theory that asks “why bother having bathrooms on The Enterprise?  Can’t they just use the transporter to evacuate your bowels onto the Klingon home world as a prank?”

Well they might be a kit car, if you buy the electric skateboard and then someone else makes kits. Or you could put a classic body on one, like a truck cab and bed. There are a lot of possibilities, but maybe it wouldn’t be considered a manufacturer that needs crash tests.

A Bugatti from 30' s seems to be quite incompatible with that kind of skateboard chas sis. These thing s are very narrow and nearly everything resides between the frame rails. The driver’s legs are positioned only slightly above the frame rails ’ lowest edge .

Type 55 and 57S are shown below.

Well if we’re basically blank-page designing something, I suspect the proportions could be altered to fit the chassis. Futurists don’t let little things like practicality and the laws of physics deter them, right?

I guess that’s one positive of the coming anarchy after the election

No regulations! Import anything (or anyone) you want! Freedom! I’m not sure it even matters who wins.

That’s awesome, but it also sounds expensive. And while I’d love to have my very own EV Volkswagen Squareback, the pessimist in me thinks this may not happen for a while...

Would be delighted to be proven wrong though, I’d love to see more user designed, unique cars on the roads.
