It must be worth something to make that, at what speed? I’d love to see the data.

You might find it’s got more to do with spray reduction than mpg - it’ll reduce the low pressure area on the side of the cab so less spray  will be sucked up from the wheel arch.

Yeah I was having a hard time believing it could make the MPGs that much better, maybe they found the design caused an effect in the rain.

Early ‘70s Ford Country Squire station wagons had a reverse wing above the back end, mounted to the roof rack . This was to direct air down to create turbulence rather than the vacuum behind it. Disrupted the airflow and aided gas mileage. This might be a similar thing discovered in a wind tunnel. With enough rum this makes sense .

So why are semi-trailers using that square cone thing instead of a wing? Bridge clearances?

Nah, its a deer grater. Hit a deer and the fins slice the venison and gently places the meat on the side step.

:P

A lot of vehicles had a wing that directed air down behind them, I had an S10 Blazer with one. I was born in the 70's but by the 90's even explorers had those sometimes in some trims. Someone once told me it was to clean off the back window with air as well. I’m not sure, this sounds like a job for Torchinski.

Yea, that wagon was the 1st one I thought of. We took the wide taillights out of a Datsun 710 race car and left holes for air to pass thru. It did settle the car down a bit at speed on the twisties. Yes, this is a good subject for the Torch To uch .
