The amazing Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton is doing some rearranging. They took the opportunity of some lovely fall weather to take some pics. These are from their Twitter feed. A lot of awesome out and about.

Now let’s see, how many of those aircraft have I written about.....
That’s a truly extraordinary place. Now I want to get down to the Naval Aviation Museum some ti me.

INCOMING HYPOTHETICAL:
Your headline makes me wonder... If they ever had to move to an entirely different location, what kind of effort would actually be required? For example, would you put the Valkyrie back in flying trim or would you take it apart and truck it? Either way you're talking huge cost in both time and money.

When they moved the XC-99 from Texas to the museum they broke it up and moved it by plane:
Of course it was in bad shape (bad enough that they gave up on it for now and sent it to the boneyard) , a better preserved aircraft might be a better risk. Still for their one-of-a-kind artifacts I don’t think they’d risk trying to get them flying again.
As a counterpoint, the Boeing 307 at Udvar-Hazy was restored to flying condition despite sinking after an emergency landing, despite that fact it was just going to go to a museum and never fly again after that trip.

Forgot air transport was a possibility. I can definitely see them doing that with stuff like the X3 and other relatively small stuff. But some of the larger ones would be a nightmare. And yet like you say, you probably wouldn’t want to risk a priceless one of a kind machine for a single flight.
Dunno. Like I said, hypothetical.

I never realized how much the Valkyrie dwarfed the blackbird and I feel a little embarrassed to say that.

Boeing 307 - always triple check your fuel levels...

I was very sad. I knew this was happening, but I was completely tied up working on the other side of base and couldn’t stop by for a peak.

I was looking to go there on Monday, but they are still closed after the last hurricane. I’d be game for meeting you there in the spring when the Angels are practicing.

Would have been cool to see for sure.

Partial disassembly by land would be my guess. The 70 is a big aircraft. It would be a challenge.

That sounds like a date. Assuming all this pandemic business is over.....
