I don’t know what’s going on here but that Panh ard in the second photo is amazing. As is the Renault Dauphine in the first. Pretty sure that’s a Renaul t 10 in there too.

The Mini does have good eyes now: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/update-yes-headlights-1844990362
The Vette is just jank

Looks like a public initiative stop to have your headlight aim tested and aligned in Paris back in the day :)

I would like to see this happen in the US. And I would like to see every lifted pickup/SUV fail and be made to correct the deficiency.

We could stand to have one of those. Some interesting cars showed up. What model is that Panhard?
And I see at least two Renault 10s. Despite their simplicity I can confirm they're reasonably good looking IRL.

Hmm, in the case of the first one, it doesn’t look like that street even exists anymore. The tower is Perret Tower in Paul Mistral Park in Grenoble, but there are no roads that close to it today:
I’m guessing that at one point the avenue to the west continued through what is now the park.

It’s a campaign from the “Sécurité Routière” (the “Road Safety” organism, similar to the NHTSA) to test the headlights and signals.
But it’s not Paris ! it’s Grenoble !
The tower that you can see is the “ Tour Perret ” (it is the first tower built in reinforced concrete in Europe) and it’s taken from around the position of the Olympic cauldron from the 1968 winter Olympic games so either it was just taken next to it or it was not there yet (there is a Renault 4 in the photo which started production in 1961) so it was probably taken in the mid 60's :

Where I live you can spot cop cars a mile away at night , because they’re the only ones with properly aimed HIDs in the whole state probably.

Now we have the “C ontrôle T ech ni que” (equivalent to the MOT or TÜV) to pass every 2 years for cars older than 5 years old and they check all of that (including that the headlight must be between 0.5 and 1.2m from the ground).
![]() 10/07/2020 at 09:08 |

Exactly :)
As i already told in another comment, the photo was taken around the spot of the Olympic vasque that is on your photo, not sure it was before it was built but it might not have been too long before .

Here in the US safety inspections vary by state. Most states have none. Even the ones that do (Massachusetts, where I live, has an annual inspection for most cars ) I don’t think are checking headlight aim, unless it is egregiously wrong. Best we can hope for is that the headlights work.

Yep, they look very nice !
Just to be thorough, additional protruding lights like that are most probably not legal anymore in here as it is a hazard in case of accident with pedestrians and bikes and it’s definitely not allowed to use them on open road if there is no fog (at least it’s the case for fog lights ).

It’s not like the check takes a lot of time. They roll the device to each of the headlights, and they see the results in mere seconds.
On my older cars they tend to even fix the aim for free, with the help of that device.

ps: forgot to mention that it was probably already closed at the time and just a parking, at least until like 10 years ago there was some parking spots around there (the square part without grass next to the vasque and there was also parking spots under the trees on the other side of the vasque ).

The Panhard is a PL17, of which there were several variations. This is one of the older ones, later models lost the chrome strip between the headlights and moved the indicators up so they were in line with the headlights.

I love how the front end of these things look. They’re just so iconic in that sort of half melted ha lf sculpted look with the headlights separated from the bodywork.
The chrome strip makes it kind of look like it has a slightly surprised unibrow. But it would appear that one has had the side chrome removed with just the central chrome left.

I’d just like to see massively lifted pickups/SUVs
off the road entirely because if you’re front bumper is high enough to ride THROUGH my rear window, above where my car was DESIGNED TO TAKE AN IMPACT,
that is a MASSIVE safety issue.

Ah cool, learning things today! :D

The fact that most states have NO INSPECTIONS EVER AT ALL scares me...
![]() 10/07/2020 at 15:27 |

Inspection rules vary from province to province here in Canada, but I think all provinces have them...not sure about the T
erritories. Here in Nova Scotia, all vehicles have a mandatory inspection every two years.

Always loved those but just in case you didn’t know, what you call chrome is in fact aluminium :)

In the territories there are probably not much traffic and not much bikes or peoples wandering at foot and larger roads so in a way it’s less scary than in densely populated areas with windy roads and complex intersections with high traffic and stressed peoples :)

Oh, even better!
![]() 10/07/2020 at 16:17 |

It should! I mean it’s easy to see why people don’t like them, but really, we should have them everywhere, and they probably should be more stringent where they already exist .

A lot of areas up north are far more lax on that sort of thing as it can be too cold for salt to even work, so vehicles last a lot longer there in terms of bodywork. But most there would be trucks, SUVs, snowmobiles, quad bikes, etc.
