The BMW threw a misfire code and was idling poorly so I pulled the plugs and... jesus. Now the question is... why is my car running lean? Surely it doesn’t have to do with the bolt-ons and slightly broke n o2 sensor

That is a LOT of gap. Is that spec?

If you get past the 02 sensor/MAF sensor, check intake boots and finally throttle body gasket.

Those plugs are destroyed and not even the right style. This is the style of plug that should be in there.

Yeah that stuff is all gonna get R&R’d along with the CCV system.

I like the mismatched one.

Yeah, those look to have used their supply of precious metal about as much as you can ask them to. Also: One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong... W ho swaps just one plug (or five)?

Only partly related, but how long can you expect to get good life out of a set of plugs in an E46 motor? I’ve been replacing my coils one at a time as they go bad with some used spares a friend gave me (2 bad coils so far this year) and I did plugs about 18 months ago, but I’m wondering if I should bite the bullet and do a full set of new plugs and coils soon. My car is running pretty well with no codes or anything at the moment. Bit of a low idle on startup but otherwise fine.

Ah yes, the expensive ones.

I’d do the plugs but wait for the coils to go bad

How did you get that picture to post without doing an attribution?

Those look terrible. The ones I took out of my mazda at 70,000 miles looks almost new.

One of those things isn’ t like the others :p
Get 6 NGK Lasers (or Denso Iridium TT or Iridium LL
). And this time, get all 6 the same :o)

Why do you say they are destroyed, they have an electrode and ground. Those plugs look fine to me. Maybe the gap maybe a bit big but they seem intact so I doubt they were causing a problem. Also, t hey are irridium plugs so they were not cheap.
Plus whatever their condition, they will not cause your car to run lean.

At least you have SOME electrode left.

“In-house” and then click “attribution not required”. Just as much work but it doesn’t show up.

As near as I can tell the previous owner of this car was a fucking drooling moron. The scary part is he worked at a mechanics shop.

It has 6 NGK Lasers in it and is much happier now. I’m currently chasing down whatever made the car run lean in the first place.

Pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking. I hate that you have to remove the cabin air filter to remove the engine cover.
