This ship-breaking yard in Turkey has been in the news with cruise ships being retired early thanks to COVID-19 and the resulting eye candy is worth a look.

I’m OK with this industry going away.

A lot of pretty new ones going, too. Sad thing is, the more classic style , intimate sized ones will all be scrapped, and we’ll be left exclusively with your choice of a 100,000+ ton, overcrowded mega ship, or a different 100,000+ ton, overcrowded megaship. The 1990s-early '00s was the last period where there were still some halfway reasonably sized ships being built, and they're pretty well all going for demo

How would one go about procuring one of those? You see decommissioned ship but I see my new house/rental property!

Seriously, dock them in NYC/SF/Seattle/Vancouver/etc. and... bam affordable housing!

But affordable housing is illegal in all of those cities.

Unfortunately so is involuntary hospitalization.....so maybe we should have these instead of our tent cities. Seems more....festive.

It’s been ruined by greedy people wanting to pack the most “customers” in at once. Just like airlines

Man that would fit in so well in my town. I’d be cool if you could keep some of the attractions going too. At least  the mini golf and bar lol

Bring em to Minneapolis (up the Mississippi). Low in come housing is all we’re allowed to have anymore.........

It’s weird that they still had “people getting COVID on cruise ships” as late as July...

Like how much of a discount on a cruise boat fare do they have to give you for you to step aboard A Death Ship?

I was joking but this has me thinking. I wonder if there are compromises involved with it being a cruise ship that would make that uneconomical? They’re designed to house people en-masse.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We did it temporarily for the 2010 Olympic security and police accommodation.  The high cost of birthing plus the high cost of utilities would be two downsides I can think of.  But at the end of the day, homelessness is not an affordability issue...it’s a mental health issue so bring back mental hospitals to actually treat the mentally ill and we solve the majority of the homeless issue.

You know what the next step is? Once all the stinky poor people have moved in, tow the sucker out to sea.
