250HP/320 Lb ft is nothing to scoff at and AWD will help it put it down properly. It’ll be zippy around town and all that torque means 6 speeds auto is enough. It’s basically a more practical Mazda 3 turbo hatch. It’s literally just 1.5" taller and the black cladding is a non-issue for me on darker color
2021 CX-30 turbo
It’s got the newer Mazda interior that’s very nice.
Decent space in the back, no huge blindspots like the hatch. This class of performance subcompact SUVs are going to be the new Hot/Warm hatches going forward.
The reviews for the non-turbo version have been very positive in general. I’m going to test drive one when I’m shopping for my next vehicle.

Why not get an awd Mazda 3? You bring shame on us all by posting that bloated tick.

I’ll never forgive Mazda for the name. What were they thinking?
Th at aside, it should be a fun car!

I have done Mazda three times for the auto show and they are pretty nice. I drove a lot of them into the building, I’ve never taken them for a test drive really but I have gone down a street and into the convention center! They seemed like a nice place to be.

Screw the Mazda 3 and its stupid C- pillar and its cramped back seat, total deal-breaker. I’d never even remotely consider one. This is the better Mazda 3 hatch. And yes, I actually sat in one to verify this.

Cx-4 was taken already by the China-Only model

This is a bad take.
Arguing something is better/worse based on an arbitrary checklist of what enthusiasts consider good and bad is ridiculous.

$30,000 though? I mean, it’s
30,000 damn dollars. Remember when Mazda made inexpensive cars for the masses?

The average new vehicle transaction price is $38,000.

Those days are gone with their “Premium” push , and I’d say i f you’re buying used you get a near luxury interior for an affordable price.

The downside of the 6AT is the city mileage. My wife’s 2.5 NA CX-5 which is admittedly a bit heavier than this gets only like 22 mpg at best in town. Sometimes lower.
Suspension on the CX-30 is pure 3, I’m sure there’s a way to drop it. The cladding is excessive but hey it’d probably only cost a few hundred at a body shop to color match it.

I wonder why they stuck with a six speed auto?

Hmmm I checked the specs for the Cx30 2.5 NA AWD- 24 city, 31 mpg, and 26 mpg combined
Cx5 turbo is 22 city , 27 Highway, 24 combined, so we can expect this to be somewhere in the middle?
I can live with it over the 17MPG city 25 highway on premium now with the G because sweet sweet turbo torque.

I mean the crossover is only going to have a few percent better visibility. And it’ll be a little less efficient / fun because its only a few percent bigger. Pick your poison .

They’re a small company, development costs would be high They’re like 22 in the list of automakers by production volume . Plus the 6 is fine with the turbo because it has so much torque you don’t need to downshift to get it going in low and midrange. Hopefully they can get Toyota’s 8 speed in their vehicles given the partnership.

Her car is rated 24/26/30. She drives almost exclusively short in-town trips as she hates DC area highways. Her car basically only sees the highway with me driving. She doesn’t usually reset her trip meter with every tank. That’s another thing that usually falls to me. The cumulative mpg readout usually is in the 21-22 range. Observed highway mileage is much closer to the ratings but ours rarely gets that opportunity. It also just doesn’t get driven enough for the mileage to bother us.
The other thing to look out for on Mazdas in particular, and many new cars in general, is right knee clearance for splaying your legs out during relaxed cruising. The CX-5 center console is pretty big and gets in the way of my knee. Not so much that I’m uncomfortable but it would probably annoy me more if it were my DD. My Civic Si is actually better at this than the CX-5.

But they owned the name. People in Europe wouldn’t care, and no one else would even know.
Cadillac has proved that having a wonky, ever changing naming scheme can be deadly to a brand. I just don’t think the risk was worth it.

Have an 18 Lexus NX 300. I gave it a mild drop and better wheels. Now that we have bought out our lease on it, it’s getting good tires and it should drive like a tall hatch.
Hear very good things about the Mazdas when shopping for a replacement before we decided just to buy out our lease.

Well at least its got a C-pillar window
And the MPG difference is hardly a deal-breaker. This example for comparison. I drive in the city mostly anyway so 27 vs 31? don’t care.
Like you said, pick your poison

I think I paid $16.5k for my Mazda 3s hatch.
Decided against optional ABS... LOL

In Doug’s review of the CX-30, he said that supposedly Mazda felt that having two different CX-4s in different markets would be more confusing than calling the CX-30 the CX-30. Whether that’s actually the case is debatable. I’m not sure this rings true because the previous generation 6 was 2 different versions for the US (red) and rest of world (silver).

kind of the Crosstrek XT that Subaru doesn’t want to build - interesting that Mazda feels there is a business case for it

It’ll be zippy around town and all that torque means 6 speeds auto is enough .
I remember when anything more than 4 speeds in an automatic was unusual and
outstanding. Now I feel old

But the cladding...that’s what kills me versus the CX-3 it replaced.
I wish I could drive a non -Fo MoCo vehicle inside the plant grounds w/o getting shit from the UAW becau se I’d get a CX-3 Grand Touring to replace my WRX .
I guess I could argue that Mazda was once owned by Ford and I could probably find a bunch of parts stamped Ford but is it really a hill I want to die on?
