They do seem a bit less safe than you’d like. I mean I wouldn’t be concerned about taking a sightseeing flight, but I do think if I were in a position, that I’d ever be like those rich guys who commute from Connecticut to Manhattan by helicopter daily.

That said, I don’t actually have any idea if it’s even riskier than driving, just that it’s a lot less safe than commercial passenger aviation.

I don’t know that I’d say they’re unsafe, but they’re probably not as safe as airplanes. A fixed wing plane can still glide for a bit after an engine failure, a helicopter will drop like a stone.

Helicopters can “glide” a bit as long as the rotor is attached and free. It’s called autorotation and it is a much steeper descent than a small airplane.

Only time I’ve ever wished for an aircraft to crash was hiking in the Grand and Waimea Canyons. Coincidentally, they’ve crashed in/near both. Turns out people with no moral qualms about piloting aircraft through serene naturals areas aren’t very good pilots.
