Ours in Michigan has gotten pretty decent since they started the online queues.  You get text message updates as you go.  Makes it much less frustrating.

Only slightly joking, but my annual membership to AAA is worth it just to never need to go to the DMV. Annual registration and smog cert takes about an hour, including driving from my house to the smog station, then to AAA, and finally back home.

In fact, the only two times I’ve gone to the DMV in the past 8 years wa s to get my “Real ID” and to pick up the vanity plates for the Vette.
