EDIT: That was fast, he bought a 2019 Audi SQ5 Premium in Azores Green! Actual Car below. Those are nicer wheels than I have seen before. Pending TD and review!

Kinja'd!!!

My Father’s history with cars has been super cool, but has gotten significantly less cool in recent years. A few years ago, he had one of those twin turbo X5s that had the top end/turbo “recall” same color as the one pictured below. After that was complete, he dumped it worried it would be a problem in the future. I loved that car, I mean I wouldn’t want one but it was fun. After that he really went down hill.

Kinja'd!!!

We usually go to see cars together, I found him a late e90 335i with 3 pedals that he loved but went to go see it on his own. They didn’t have it when he got there and he bought a white 335i automatic instead...335GT. What a fat ugly piece of poop that thing was.

Kinja'd!!!

Most recently, he dumped that for a bucket list car. “A Big Red Pickup”. A 2017 F-150 super crew 6.5' bed 3.5 eco-boost to be precise. It is most certainly A big red truck. It’s nice.

Annnnnnyway...When it gets cold, the locks freeze up on the truck. He and my mom have had to HOLD THE DOORS SHUT while moving on more than one occasion. It has been looked at twice by the dealer for this. There is a TSB on the matter. He got it back this morning, and had a noon appointment...Couldn’t get into his truck.

LATER truck! I don’t blame him. If the truck were older or not purchased brand new I might look into fixing it myself or something, maybe. This would piss me off enough to ditch it.

So he was all set to go down and buy a 2019 Land Rover Discovery in white! Luckily he asked my opinion, I told him and instead he looked at an LR4 and an RRS, neither of which he was crazy about for that kind of money. My wife chimed it with all of her sensibility and suggested that he get a VW Atlas (because that is what she wants) as he could get one optioned to the moon for far less.

He bit on that, and was on his way to the dealer where I bought my Alltrack, but not before I could throw an SQ5 shaped wrench into the mix.

The one I found was sold, but then he found a GREEN one!

Kinja'd!!!

I doubt he’s going to make a deal today. So Oppo, what else should my dad drive? He drives to and from the golf course, grocery store, bank, and my house. He wants an “SUV” and a SQ 5 is about as small as he would go for.

Well I looked at SQ5s and ended up in an X3, so... The SQ5 is divine (especially in that green) except the fake exhausts pissed me off.

Anyway, Model X?

Yea those exhausts are whack but I otherwise love them. I have a friend with a 2016 and another with a 2020, they are both awesome.

Model X is out, neither of us are fans. X3 could be in though. We had both swarn off BMW’s after the E chassis, but now the car is for a different purpose.

Two colleagues have newish ones, one (a dark blue one with all matching panels and a camel colored interior) I can’t take my eyes off of on my way in.

Sounds like your Dad has car ADD, so he needs something that won’t depreciate.

Tell him to look at FJ Cruisers.

Haha indeed, I told him to 2 year lease whatever he gets because that is about all he makes it.

It’s weird. It’s like he’s afraid to drive the cool cars now. My mom’s C5 and my M3 are in his garage but I have to set reminders to go over and drive both of those cars regularly or no one will!

Full disclosure, my mom is still in the honeymoon phase with her GTI and shes afraid to drive the Vette when it’s not sunny and warm.

If I was in the market for a smallish  German SUV I’d probably go for something like this:

My dad hardly ever drives his C5 either.  Glass houses - I haven’t driven my Miata in over a week (mostly because of holiday travel).

How about the new Mercedes GLE?

Don’t get the base engine, get the V6.

The X3 is a lot taller and higher than the SQ5 if that’s a plus? Ends up being cheaper as well. If it’s a lease especially I feel like nothing could go wrong.

They are neat. My friend who now has an SQ5, had one. I got to take it on a longish trip and it was fantastic. It is however awfully similar to the SQ5 and I also slightly prefer the Audi. Manly because I’m one of those people that thinks the only “Porsche” is the 911.

It’s been over a month for the M3, partially because I have to go get it to drive it, but mostly because I am in love with the 1502.

He hates Mercedes, there’s no good reason for it but he won’t have one. Funny because it’s really the one that ticks all of the boxes. Mercs are always the most plush.

Sure is, I have spent considerable time behind the wheel of both and actually prefer the Audi.

It does tick all the boxes.

A Lexus Land Cruiser would be the ultimate in my book. I’ m not sure what the price range is or if there’s an aversion to getting used/ CPO cars though.

The first thing I said when he said no to Mercedes was “well you’re not going to like this either, but Lexus and Mercedes really offer everything you want, and the Lex you don’t really even have to worry about.” I also recommended a Land Cruiser saying it’s the last car he’ d ever need to buy which was immediately a reason not to buy it haha.

I’m not sure that it was well bought or not but I’m not going to ask. Knowing my dad in his senior years, it was not. Haha.

However if you’re only referring to a man getting the car he wants it was very well bought!

As long as he can both afford it and enjoy it, then it was well bought. Maybe it wasn’t the wisest financial decision, but not everything in life has to be a financial decision.

Great choice, especially in that green! My local Audi store stocks a lot of SQ5's with those wheels and I love them. Tried to get my cousin into a one but was too small.

Man your dad is all over the map and super impulsive with car buys or something...or just gets talked in to things REALLY easily???

Just be glad he didn’t take the F-150 to the dealer, get pissed off that the doors were locked up again, and get talked in to driving home in a brand new Ecosport!

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > ZHP Sparky, the 5th

I think I can trace it back to our M3's. He always held onto cars for a long time. When I told him I was looking at M3's he went out and bought a very slightly used black coupe. A few months (January 2007) later I scooped up an older, more used, Phoenix yellow convertible.

He had that car for about 8 months. I still have mine... You guessed it, his was an SMG. I told him not to, but the price got him. Since then hes had 3 X5's, A C5, The 335GT, The F150, and now the SQ5. Honestly I think he kind of lost it for cars a little bit. Growing up he had a Volvo turbo brick, a Datsun 280, A C4, E32 735 manual, I know I’m forgetting a few.

Hey, as long as he can afford it makes for quite the automotive history! Missed the part where he actually bought the SQ5 – while I am more drawn to the prior gen (real exhausts!), the current one is a hell of a looker and a super nice car too.

The first set of wheels and the last set look like they came off a C6 Z06 and a C6 ZR1.  Which one are on the car he found?

I honestly think it will be smaller than my dad wants. For that I feel slightly guilty, but he was going to go buy a VW Atlas if this didn’t work out. He’ll use the fun pedal in the Audi a lot more than he’d use the space in the Atlas.

I have two friends with them, one old and one new. Totally agree on the looks of the older one, the exhaust on the new one is criminal. Others have said that too.

Ooh man, I do love that green! Before we got our ‘18 SQ5 we test drove a S5 Sportback in that (or a similar for MY ‘18) shade of green and I am a huge fan. Wait, the very last pic is of a Q5, is that just for wheel reference?

Exhaust issues aside, I do love it. Well done Tipper’s father, well done.

EDIT: I saw the comment that the first one is the actual pic.

Haha well I’m guessing the Aviator / Navigator isn’t an option either, considering Ford heritage? They’re pretty good too.

If so, the SQ5 is the only one left lol

Green is a polarizing color. I’ve hated green for years, but with all the ‘good’ colors being so common, over used, green has become one of my favorites. I was slumming Craigslist and came across a green Corvette of all things. It was gorgeous. That Audi is high class green.

He should have bought a Navigator instead of the F150 because he did 0 pickup truck things with it, but yes after the trouble with the ford he’s out on them
