Update : 3 months later, there are now only eleven new, manual Renegades on dealer lots discoverable via Autotrader. All twelve from Hoblit appear to have sold, so I guess they knew what they had .
The more things change, though, the more they stay the same. Now 1/3rd of the available inventory is at a different dealership, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I believe they were one of the four dealerships I identified in September as having 4 such vehicles, so they may not have sold any during that time.
Sadly Scott’s collection is white/white/white/silver, but there is a red Latitude in Iowa I could be tempted to try to buy, if it’s still stuck there later this year and the dealer is willing to haggle. It’ll be, what, 3 years old at that point? Surely they’ve got to be eager to ditch it.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I’ve mentioned a piece of this puzzle in FP comments, but I thought I’d bring it here and expand on it a bit.
Via Autotrader’s search tool, there are fewer than 40 remaining new manual Renegades on U.S. dealer lots. These are all 2018 models, since Jeep dropped the stick shift in 2019 (boo).
(Anyone know what percentage of dealerships are covered by Autotrader? Also worth pointing out that yes, this analysis is subject to the usual problems with self-reported transmission details, but every one I’ve checked via photos is indeed a manual.)
What I find fascinating is the decidedly non-random distribution of these renegade Renegades.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ! 1/3rd of the remaining examples are in one spot!
There are four dealerships in total with at least four examples each, which means 2/3rds of unsold manual Renegades in the United States are found on just four dealer lots.
Did someone at these dealerships decide to corner the market? Have they been shuffled away from low-selling dealers to ones that have had success? How does this happen?

I’d guess that if they still have them on their lots after at least a year, it is because they are trying to hold out for buyers who will pay a premium for a manual now that you can’t get them anywhere else? Not clear to me this is a smart move (holding cars for that long does not seem likely to be profitable, especially as no one is going to pay much of a premium for a Renegade).

Does that rebate mean they are roughly 15 grand? They are all front instead of 4 wheel so yeah it’s a no from me.

They seem to be about $ 9-10k below MSRP, at least at Hoblit, once you throw in rebates, so they certainly don’t seem like they’re going to be money-makers.

Thirteen thousand four hundred ninety dollars for a new red 4x4 Jeep with a manual transmission my god that’s an impulse buy

Yeah, 15 is the price I’ve seen them listed on Autotrader.
I hadn’t noticed until writing this that they seemed to frequently be front-wheel drive. I was always annoyed that the Trailhawk and stick were mutually exclusive, but I agree, not having 4wd at all is a deal-breaker for me.

I wonder if I could get it shipped...
The unfortunate thing is there are no manual Renegades within 300 miles of me, at least new, so I have no idea how they drive.

Maybe they thought they would be, and were wrong? I’d assume car dealers have a better handle on their business than that, but then again as I get older and see more and more businesses, I become less convinced that the people in charge have any particular idea what they are doing...

Almost certainly.

Ifor only there was a small Jeep 4x4 that was available with a manual that people could buy instead of the Renegade.
Could there be a market for such a vehicle? Maybe Ford will make something like that soon.

Interestingly, the other manual 4wd Renegades I’ve found listed are typically closer to 30k. I wonder if that one isn’t really 4wd.

Well, not for the 15k that Hoblit is asking.

In this country...you are quite the renegade if you actually buy a Renegade...any sort of Renegade!
The last Jeep dealer (also Ford and Volvo) I saw didn't even have one on the lot.

I found a neighbor a new 2017 Fiesta SE sedan 5MT for $9900. A local Ford dealer screwed up when ordering, clicked manual by accident. When I found it they had 17 identical Fiestas that had been on the lot well over a year.

That would be my guess. In the past I’ve run in to dealers with crazy ideas about what a car could sell for. Besides, all you have to do is look around Jalopnik and then look at pub lished sales stats to see that there isn’t a shortage of people with wildly inflated notions of the value of manual transmissions. E ven people who love stick and clutch transmissions like automatics for their daily rush hour commute today.

That’s one hell of an oops. You’d think someone at the manufacturer would ask questions about that, but I suppose as long as the check clears...

Wow I’m sure some one got fired over that.

True, except I hang onto vehicles until the bitter end.

I’m willing to bet that the Pentastar, even with all of its issues, is probably more reliable than whatever italian craptastic motor the Renegade has

It most likely has to do with allocations and what that dealer decides to order. FCA might have said, you take 6 manual renegades and we’ll give you the 15 extra RAM 1500 Big Horn’s you want. That’s generally how dealers end up with oddball cars and color combos the manufacture needs sold.
At my dealer, we maybe get one stick (non-Wrangler) Jeep every couple months and they generally sell pretty quick. Our last Compass Sport 6MT only lasted two weeks.

I didn’t know until a few days ago the Compass was sold with a stick. What’s it like to drive, do you know?

You rarely see them, but it’s not a bad way to get an awd manual crossover for cheap.
I only drove it for a limited amount, but the clutch is light as expected and the shifter has a decent feel with long-ish throws. The 2.4 motor isn’t great, but does make it feel a little more lively than with the auto. It’s decent competition to the the manual Crosstrek.

I may keep an eye open for one now that I know the manual option exists. Thanks.

The stick renegade was one of the last cheap manual vehicles to buy here. I leased one with only the all-weather mats, and A/C options ticked. MSRP was barely $20k. It was a fun little car that always felt like you were flooring it just to keep with traffic.

The Renegade is 90% Fiat 500l, so the end probably isn’t too far off if you buy that car. I mean, it’s depreciated by like 3 0% just sitting at the dealership.

Athe least with the JL, when you reach the bitter end you can just engage 4lo and keep going.

When is jeep going to start building j eeps again ? The transmission problems from fiat make it impossible for me to purchase one .

That stuff happens. I was recently in a Lincoln dealer and they had an $ 80k Aviator sitting in the showroom.
Was talking to th e sales guy and he said “ yeah there’s a reason why this one is on display. It’ll be here a while- it’s RWD.” In Chicago. He referred to it as trade bait - as in trade it to another dealer ( far away).

Hoblit CJDR is located about 30 minutes from me. They have something of a history with posting inventory they don’t actually have. In fact, they had listed something like 15 Jeep Gladiator base models in stock last fall. When I called to check on a specific one , the salesperson said they only had Rubicons on the lot, and only three of them at that.

Aha, that makes a great deal more sense than them actually having a dozen unicorns.

Find a Carmax that has one and go drive it. If it’s not close enough, get it transferred to one closer to you. You may have to shell out a little, so it’s up to you to decide what a test drive is worth.
ETA: I see I’ve ended up on a months-old thread somehow. Whoops.

Good point, thanks. Carmax is never on my radar since I’m typically browsing for 30 or 40-year-old Jeeps.

Renegade engine is the Abarth 1.4L. Makes awesome sounds and offers plenty of aftermarket.
