Ridiculous
price.
There’s even grain whisky in this blend.
They sold the 3 bottles they had in less than an hour. This is just one example and
the first reason I will probably never buy a Japanese whisky.
I’m not saying Chivas Regal 18 is as good,
but as a blend
concept it’s the same idea. T
here’s no way it’s 10x better. It can’t be worth it.

I have a bottle of Nikka Yoishi (sp?) that was under $50, I believe, and it’s fantastic. So I wouldn’t rule out all Japanese whisky just cause that one is expensive. Also , I wouldn’t buy $1,000 whisky of any type unless I could also afford to light my cigars with $100 bills.

Look up suntory whiskey's ”Toki” for a good, affordable Japanese whiskey. It's light, a bit on the fruity/sour side, and I can get a bottle for under 35$ all day, every day.

I’m willing to bet there are many
non-

from S

35 or $
40
. I want to keep an open mind,

You can get some of the...less precious Japanese boozes for considerably less. My local J-supermarket had Suntory Toki for $20/pop. My local WalMart & Target apparently carries it too.
Never really tried Nikka whiskey (from Hokkaido!) but the Suntory stuff’s nice .

I’ve tried Suntory and was unimpressed. I also did not realize Chivas 18 was so expensive; I remember drinking from a bottle my mom had in her cabinet when I was in college (so, 2005) that was probably from the early 80s

Maybe try to see more than one, then. Imagine if the only S cotch you’d ever seen was this one so you swore off all Scotch whiskey forever.

I’ve had this. It’s definitely n ot worth $28 00. That doesn’t mean I’ll never drink another bourbon.

I can’t find a single
Japan
ese whisky that doesn’t have a
much cheaper scotch alternative. What are the chances that every Japanese whisky is better than the scotch alternative?

I like Toki but it’s a $60 bottle here, it gets into the territory of other good whiskys. $20 (I’m guessing USD) is an absurdly low price, that’s less than half of what I have to pay in Canuckistan.

“Good” and “worth it” are two very different concepts to me. I have no doubt that a $1,000 bottle of liquor is very good, but anything over $100 is pushing beyond the limits of worth it to me. I can appreciate the difference between the bottom shelf stuff and something around eye-level in the liquor store, but above a certain point it just feels like a waste of money.
This applies to most things in my life, not just alcohol.

I love Japanese whiskies, but as a rule I don’t buy any bottle that goes into triple digits. It’s just not worth it to me.
Also, if you want to talk ridiculous prices, I found this in Singapore (and their dollar is on par with Canada) :
So... there’s stuff like that. I love any Macallan whisky, but with eight grand I’d rather buy a few regular bottles of Macallan and some Singapore hookers.

I enjoy Japanese whisky, but remain a staunchly committed bourbon man. And there is a metric fuck-ton of excellent bourbon out there for under $100. I get the thrill of drinking super-expensive booze, I’ve gone to a couple of tasting parties where several thou sand dollars worth of booze was sampled out to a couple dozen attendees, but honestly my collection is pretty simple... Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey and Breckenridge Distillery are two of my ALL time favorites, both can be found for under $70. Maker’s Mark is my go-to for mass produced big name bourbon. Strangely, despite my general distate for scotch and/or rye whiskey, I think Jameson’s Redbreast is pretty great too.
Long story short, I’d drink the hell outta that $1000 Tsuru, but only on somebody else’s dime.

Ridiculous prices. I prefer a nice rye whiskey like this... and it only costs CAD$27.50 :

i wonder if its all pricey coz they have a whiskey shortage? https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/how-tv-show-and-high-quality-has-led-japanese-whisky-shortage-180969102/

What are the chances that every Japanese whisky is better than the scotch alternative?
This premise is fundamentally illogical , like saying there’s no need to ever taste salmon sushi because you like lox already. O bviously, n ot every Japanese whiskey has a Scotch alternative—different grain profile, different smoke if smoked, different woods, different aging, etc. If the premise is that you’ve liked every single S cotch blend you’ve ever tasted, I question whether you’ve tasted very many, or whether you have taste buds.
I like Scotch a lot, but I don’t like every Scotch I’ve tried, and I’m certainly never going to buy one of the ones that costs $5-10k . I like Japanese whiskey a lot, but have tasted some I hated, and would not buy a $1000 bottle . I like many Irish whiskeys a lot too, but certainly not all of them . They are different from each other.
Try a Japa nese whiskey. You might like it. You might not! I f you don’t, try anothe r one. But don’t say “I saw an expensive one once and will therefore never taste any of them, including the reasonably priced ones.”

$100 is my sweet spot also. Lately though my budget’s been creeping up to $130. I’ve bought 2 bottles over $200 and was very disappointed with one. This was an expensive lesson, but a good one.
I’d like
Elijah Craig B
arrel S

Also, for my money Chivas is trash and there are numerous Japanese whiskeys for half the price that I’d rather drink every day and twice on Sundays.

This guy’s point is apparently that he’ll never taste a $50-100 bottle because he saw a $1000 bottle once. Like hearing that Pappy goes for over $2000 and swearing off all bourbon forever.

While Redbreast and Jameson are both owned by Irish Distillers/Pernod, and they are distilled at the same facility, Redbreast isn’t a version of Jameson. Redbreast is a single pot still, made from 100% barley....whereas Jameson is a blend of grain whiskey with some barley as well.
I’ll have to give Stranahans a try....never had it, but I just looked it up and it h appens to be on sale for $55 near me.

I don’t consider myself a connosuier, but I like my bo urbon. I’ve never had Japanese whisky. Can someone enlighten me on the differences? Obviously there are more than a few factors that play into that. But what makes Japanese whisky Japanese whisky?

I’ve also had it and can 100% confirm it’s not worth that. In fact, I think the 20 year is better and can be had for $700-1200 less (depending on where/when you find it).

I could afford to drink swill twice a day and 4x on Sundays. But no t quality stuff. Well, I could, but then I wouldn't be able to afford car projects and such.

That’s a pretty reasonable price for Stranahans. Breckenridge os my favorite right now, and they do a bunch of small batch, special edition stuff every year around the holidays, they even do a spiced rum that’s ridiculously good. I have a weak spot for Sailor Jerry’s though, which is a funny measuring stick for rum, lol...
![]() 09/27/2019 at 11:36 |

That is too funny....Sailor Jerry’s is a summer staple for me. splash of soda water, splash of coke and a s mall squeeze of lime. I’ve had (and like) lots of better rums but that one is always in my cabinet.

I like my Sailor Jerry’s with just about any carbonated beverage, lately it’s been the lime diet coke or even Vernor’s ginger ale. I have my “I’m tired, but want to stay up, have a few drinks and binge Netflix” cocktail though, which may or may not paint me as a white trash teenage girl ( but I don’t care, it’s delicious) which is a Purple Guava Pear Bang energy drink with some Three Olives grape vodka. Get’s the job done while tasting delicious!
