I’m a flats man myself... the meat’s just so much more tender and tasty.
Actually love it when the tips are left attached, too. Some crispy, crunchy goodness there!
Mrs. addition learned to eat chicken from her daddy. I clean the bones pretty well, but she leaves those damn things bare...

Here’s something: I prefer the “drumettes” while my wife prefers the “flats.”
Well didn’t that just work itself out nicely.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:02 |

Drumettes. The two bones in the flat are too much work and I’ve managed to break a few by eating too agg ressively
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:04 |

Drumettes. So much less effort needed to get the meat off the bone. Plus the bones in flats break way too easily. I want to eat chick en, not bone shards.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:05 |

Technique, my friend. I can get a flat perfectly
clean without ever separating the bones.

Did you realize that after you were married?
Well, this was clearly meant to be...
Also, your wife has great taste. =)

Flats, 100%.

I like food.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:09 |

Flats, but honestly in general I avoid chicken with bones (really meat with bones). I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine if that means that I’m smart enough to realize that paying a tiny bit more to make food convenient to eat is well worth it, or whether I’m just secretly a six-year-old.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:11 |

flats are a pain in the ass.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:11 |

But chicken on the bone is
the best
.
My six-year-old greatly prefer his on the bone to not, fwiw.

oh, then you’d love chicken dum biryani. they don’t debone the chicken before tossing the pieces in the rice.

I prefer the drumettes , but will eat the wings without delay if that’s all that’s left.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:13 |

Flats. I like small bits of tender meat, not large chunks of random tendons.

YES.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:15 |
|
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not going to throw a drumette out of bed...
Because that’s where I eat my chicken wings, of course.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:15 |

The trick to eating flats is to push the meat between the bones with your tongue or use your teeth to pull the skinny bone out, then it’s all access to the meat. Saying that for me it depends. If they are small I take the drums , small flats are worthless. If they are big I’ll take the flats.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:16 |
|
Drumettes have more meat, flats have a higher sauce:meat ratio. If it’s a good sauce, flats. If it’s good chicken, drumettes.

Just ate at an Indian buffet last night. So good...
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:17 |

Flats all day. Maybe I’m stupid, but I think it easier to clean tender flats than drums.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:18 |

Oh, for sure, they all get eaten.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:20 |

This is a good point, but
YUMMM
... big, meaty, crispy flats...
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:20 |

I do not discriminate, I love both. But Ms. Saracen prefers drumettes so I will happily eat flats. I have expert flat-eating skillz.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:21 |

I find I always prefer the texture of the meat in a flat to a drumette.
Drumettes generally are drier. I’m also a thigh man, fwiw.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:22 |

It is a skill, for sure.
Like eating crawfish.

With good technique, I think you’re right.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:23 |

Flats in 80% of situations. Every once in a while the drumettes turn out better than the flats but not often.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:24 |

Yeah, a small, overcooked flat is no bueno.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:25 |

Thigh man as well.
I prefer the drumette texture. The harder chewy bits are noice.

Interesting. Do you also go for the cartilage (like Mrs. addiction)?
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:37 |
|
Drumettes. Less work, less mess.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:44 |
|
Yep, I can tear through crawfish too!
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:51 |

I prefer flats but I’ll happily eat either type.
The choices become more difficult once you get into breaded v. plain wings, wet v. dry seasoning, fried/baked/smoked/grilled, etc.
Personally, when it comes to wings, I just say yes. Everybody wins with wings (except vegetarians, I guess).
![]() 09/23/2019 at 12:56 |

So tasty.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:06 |

I can pass on the cartilage. I know some people strip the bones but IMO that’s weird.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:07 |

Yeah, she’s weird.
Waste not, want not, I guess?
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:09 |

Not a big fan of breaded, but I love both wet or dry-rubbed, and will enjoy however they’re cooked as long as they’re cooked well and are crispy on the outside.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:39 |
|
No preference. The real choice is dressing - ranch or blue cheese. Put me down for team BC.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:40 |

YAAAAS. I do this, except I extract the first bone with my teeth.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:47 |

Unbreaded f lats all day long. I can do drums too, except that if the wing joint has pieces that are not all evenly sized, larger drums can come out undercooked. No bueno. Never seem to have that problem with flats, even larger flats seem to always cook all the way through. But my default mode is to order flats extra-crispy (essentially a couple extra minutes in the fryer). I don’t even mind if they’re a touch on the dryer side, because whatever sauce is on there will make up for it, but I like ‘em well crisped and cooked thoroughly.
My technique is to to flip the flat to the side with the smaller bone and strip off that meat, exposing the bone, in one go. That’s the first bite. Then I can remove that bone cleanly with my teeth (occasionally I have to strip that bone after removing it, but that’s easy enough), and set it to the side completely barren. Then, if the wings are on the small side, I can popsicle the remaining bone in a single motion. If the wings are bigger, I’ll corn-cob the remaining bone in 2-3 bites. Nothing wasted, all delicious.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:47 |
|
I manage to get them clean without removing the one bone, but I’m going to have to try this.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:49 |

For sure. And plenty of celery & carrots.
And beer.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 13:51 |

You, sir, are a connoisseur
.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 14:03 |

Flats, and it’s not even close. If cooked properly, I can clean a flat in one swipe.
Drumettes are a PITA, and the meat usually seems a little tougher than the flats I’ve had. Also, flats are better to dip. You get a more unified sauce coverage with them.

Less a connoiseur, more of a regular for eight years . I frequent my local wing joint at least twice a week, and every server there knows what I like, and how I like it, and what I’m most likely to order on a given day of the week (daily specials...boneless Monday , taco Tuesday, wing Wednesday, cheeseburger Thursday). Any bartender or server who’s worked there for more than two weeks can take one look at me when I walk in, based off of the jewelry I am wearing at the time, and know to pour a Coke Zero (armed, which is most of the time) or a Guinness (unarmed, rarely) for me without asking .
I’m probably there an unhealthy amount. It’s not to the point where people all yell my name when I walk through the front door, but it’s not far off from that. But I have the entire menu, as well as all the flavours, memorized. First down, second down, third down, go-for-it, chipotle ranch, sweet/spicy, honey hot, mango habanero, raspberry chipotle, garlic parm, lemon pepper, spicy lemon pepper, bbq, spicy bbq, Jack Daniels, and unnecessary roughness. Before the current owner bought it, the first owner had some award-winning unique wings: waffle (fried, coated in waffle batter, refried, syrup and powdered sugar), elotes (parmesan, ground red chiles, Mexican spices), and churro (fried, coated in churro batter, refried, cinnamon sugar)...but those recipes were not sold to the new owner. Waffle wings and a Guinness were the way to go when Dallas was having a good year. *sigh*

I can go either way on flats vs drumettes but I almost always get my wings the same way - breaded, dry Cajun rub.
I don’t care for sauced wings, which some find a bit strange.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 14:36 |
|
Dry Cajun rub is dope. Unbreaded for me, though.
I like sauced, too (assuming it’s tasty).
![]() 09/23/2019 at 15:58 |

Do you just go at it with the tongue and bite it out the other side?
![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:08 |

I’m right there with you.

Mold is disgusting.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:09 |

I think I generally take a little bite off both sides, and then I
can usually hold one end, put almost
the whole w
ing in my mouth, and kind of slowly
take it out mostly clean. I guess I use my teeth to break the skin at the end
, and then (assuming it’s cooked well and not dried out), the meat pretty much comes along with the rest. Honestly, I’d need some here in front of me to remember exactly what I do - ha!

![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:16 |

Yeah but boneless is much easier to eat and you don't get tendons. Tendons and fat are disgusting.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:22 |

I’ll have to see if I can manage it. Much research will be done this weekend.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:24 |

I choose flavor.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:25 |

I’m going to try this technique the next time.

Flavor is secondary, at best, to convenience and sustenance. I want to eat and resume my normal life.
Unless we're talking sweets. Particularly ice cream. Eating that could totally be my normal life.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:32 |
|
That’s a shame. I think you’re too busy. I know some people couldn’t care less about food, though (see Soylent, etc.), but man, it’s one of the great joys of my life to enjoy great good, especially in the company of family or friends.
Oh man, I looove ice cream. It’s actually a joke in my extended family on my dad’s side how much we all love ice cream. But I’m actually kind of
lactose intolerant (only now taking it seriously in my 40s)
, and have to take it easy with that sort of stuff.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 16:34 |

On your walls, yes. As food i t’s better than fungus. And tastier than raunch dressing...

Whole wings FTW
![]() 09/23/2019 at 17:41 |

Now we’re talkin’...
![]() 09/23/2019 at 18:52 |

Yeah I’m busy. But I always make sure I can take an hour for lunch. But still don’t care about the food. Mostly it’s about relaxing. Soylent might be great for me, but I have plenty of doubts about it.
Sorbet! Dove has a good rasberry flavor on a stick with chocolate over it. It's soooo good.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 18:53 |

Mold is the definition of raunchy.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 20:06 |
|
Ooh, that sounds great.
![]() 09/23/2019 at 22:14 |

Drummies are better for dunking but flats have the superior meat/sauce ratio. I'll pick flats due to the superior texture and flavor.
![]() 09/24/2019 at 01:05 |

The sorbet texture in it is surprisingly smooth and not too acidic. It’s about as close to ice cream as sorbet can get I think. And the portion size is just right. I’m trying to get away from pints because I eat the whole thing in one sitting. Single serving treats sort of help me not do that
