Let’s see: reduced ethanol production, trade war with China so nowhere to sell all the corn. Looks like we’ll be buying corn for about 2¢/ear in the store soon. But don’t worry. Trump will just buy off the farmers with another payout.

I think that it is difficult to answer that question. The way that alcohol is currently produced requires more energy than can be released by the alcohol. Petroleum products are used to fertilizer the corn, operate the machinery, and produce heat for the distillation process. It is my understanding that the energy in the petroleum exceeds the energy in the alcohol. I wonder, however, if the process could be changed to make it more efficient.

When I was in college, I went to a lecture by a Pennsylvania farmer who had converted his tractors to alcohol (he was not an engineer, and just “fiddled” with the engines to make them run properly). The leftover mash from fermentation was used to feed his cattle. Overall, he showed numbers that indicated increased productivity and profit by using homemade alcohol.

Despite the fact that he could not drink alcohol (religious restrictions), the police made him shut down his still because it is illegal to produce ethanol in Pennsylvania.

Yes. Corn farming is gnarly to the environment and we’re using far more oil with ethanol than without.

The last buyouts were horribly mismanaged, with some families basically ripping off Uncle Sugar.

The Environmental Working Group, using data received under the Freedom of Information Act, found individual farmers in five states — Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas — received more than $900,000 in 2018, largely through a loophole that allowed each member of a farm-owning family to apply for relief.

Money flowed to foreign-owned businesses and to those who don’t live or work on a farm, including an architect in Manhattan , Chinese conglomerates and Brazilian beef companies. More than $38 million in aid money went to residents of cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Washington. ( WaPo )

wow that sucks. So what we’ve got here is: there’s bi-partisan support for oil companies to harm the environment equally and some dude that found a more efficient way got shut down, by the government.

So at the end of a day I don’t give a shit if there’s bi-partisan support on this, at the end of the day they are agreeing to continue harming the environment.

So our elected representatives are so insanely stupid that they require production of a fuel at a net-loss? And they’ve continue to commit for years and years. Admitting failure isn’t an option?
