Actually, this is the one place those yellow protectors make sense, because renters are going to scrape the bumpers up. Might as well leave them on!

why is this not an option. I get it. Right now it’s equivalent of leaving packing peanuts of a gizmo you received in mail. But that’s a sharp looking peanut if I say so myself.
Why can’t they make bumpers more attractive? Costs more to fix so win for everyone

It’s something about the rental cars that are parked in a shared lot. There’s a bike shop (that’s where I was going), and an inn/restaurant/spa/conference center. Maybe it indicates “ready” or something? Or just differentiates them from the tourist cars?
