The armrest on my wife’s 2013 Civic. She says, “Don’t use the armrest!” Any idea what I can do about this?

cover it with tape?
replace it?
burn the car?

I’ve got a similar (cracked not slid) problem in my 07 Milan. Only solution I’ve heard of is to buy a new upper armrest. I’ve considered it for my Milan but not sure it’s worth any other investments at 145k miles and 12 years old.

Get a new armrest

Look for a spare at a local salvage yard?

Check the underside, might be able to replace the cover. Or Ebay?

Just do what I do: Tell everyone you know what a scam Honda’s rep is.
I know you’ve had good luck with your older Odyssey, but things are drastically different now. I can’t fault their running gear, but every thing else that isn’t engine/tranny is just such an afterthought.

Glue a piece of shag carpet on top.

Cover it up?

I’d just wait for someone parting out their car on the forums, or if you’re patient and lucky, go to the junkyard. Temporarily I bet you could heat it up with a hairdryer and work it back into place, maybe with some light gluing.
This looks like a $200 couch I once owned (that I paid $800 for
because Ashley Furniture exists to scam people into thinking it’s good stuff that lasts more than 5 years
)

I got this. I sweat into it because no AC, but it’s kinda nice having a little dump pocket. Also straps are too short unless you cri ss cross them.

Take the car for the day and tell her that you’re going to fix it.
Then trade it in on a new GT350.

New cover and install or new armrest, whichever is cheaper. Redline looks like they make a cover for about $60.

Something similar to this happened to our works 2015 explorer, I put tape over the crack. On the explorer I think the plastic was degraded by Sun block rubbing off of our arms.

1. Remove old armrest
2. Replace with homemade plywood armrest with dry ice and secret beer compartment
3. ????
4. Profit

Visit a local upholstery shop and they’ll sew in a new piece of vinyl or leather . Especially if you can don’t have to have an absolutely perfect match on the material (and ever more so show up with just the armrest, some cash and don’t care about a receipt ), I would guess you’ll get it back with a new piece of material for less than $100.

I’ve got a black towel over it now. This happened in the space of a few months, when I started driving the car regularly. As an old stick shifter, I put my elbow on the rest and rest my hand on the shifter. So when my wife tells me to just keep both hands on the wheel, that’s a non-starter.

Thanks. I’ll probably go with some aftermarket cover. A couple people provided links for this generation of Civic, so it seems I’m not the only one who has this problem.

No, but I tend to lean that way, so I’m putting pressure on it much of the time I’m driving.

Sell it and buy something with better quality?
Jokes aside, a new cover shouldn’t be too expensive.
![]() 08/16/2019 at 10:25 |
|
It ’s all down to the quality of the materials. I had a cloth armrest in my 2001 Golf and it never wore through with 16 years of use. This is just shitty fake leather.
![]() 08/16/2019 at 10:25 |
|
Various folks have offered links to $10 solutions. I’ll probably go that route. Might even look for a cloth cover.

This should be a good reminder to keep your elbow off the arm rest!

Like t he couches in your grandma’s house, the armrest is meant to be seen, not used.... without protection .
![]() 08/16/2019 at 11:17 |

Oh my god, I remember those things. We never had them, but we knew, and visited, folks who did. Just imagine the BPAs or other nasty chemicals in those back in the day.
![]() 08/16/2019 at 11:30 |

B ah! That’s nothing compared to the smoke. I’m sure that both my grandmother and grandfather were pack-a-day smokers. Probably more.
I remember grandma talking to me about not smoking. One of her reasons was the amount of money they had spent on cigar ettes. “I could have bought a really nice house with that money,” she said.
![]() 08/16/2019 at 11:35 |
|
My mom smoked a pack of Viceroys a day, and she smoked while she was pregnant, which might explain something. Of course, back in 1966 they didn’t understand how dangerous it is. I would be horrified to know how much I’ve spent on cigars over the years, though I have stopped smoking.

Buy a replacement piece or remove that one and get a upholstery shop to re-cover it.

I’m glad I never picked up the habit. That, and dipping. My school brought in a doctor to show us pictures of people with mouth and throat cancer. That was enough to scare me away from tobacco for life.
![]() 08/16/2019 at 12:03 |

Common with Honda vinyl from the mid-2000s to the mid- teens. It’s too thin for its intended use. The Accord and Acura TL were the worst about this.
If there’s a Classic Soft Trim near you, the pattern number is 617126. It’s piece 1CA (1st row, center armrest) and you’ll ask for 001 black with 69070 slate contrast stitch.
The top part is probably going to be vinyl although it might be leather. When I worked there we charged under $100 for it, and the vinyl we used was better anyway.

Dipping is horrible. In college, the sports bros would sit in class with a soda bottle full of spit. It was disgusting.
![]() 08/16/2019 at 13:53 |

Thanks, but an after-market cover is about $10. I’ll probably go that route.

they have them on ebay for cheap, they work. This is a very common Honda problem that I do not repair on anything other than an unsold used car.

that kind of stuff bugs me... you could replace the whole lid with a chunk of 2x6 (real wood interior!)

We’ve had the car for three years, but I haven’t been driving it much except for the last few months. So this happened in a very short time. It’s really crappy materials.

I had a 2010 Civic and a 2006 CRV, both had black vinyl wrapped on the pillar between the side windows. WTF? Is some shit black vinyl that goes bad acceptable as a factory trim?? Well they are gone and I have the TSX wagon now, it has it too! Why can’t they just put a painted piece there. I will put 303 vinyl protectant on it and hopefully it will fare better, it lived the first part of its existence in Seattle so not so much sun.... It a nnoys me.
