Kinja'd!!!

I will be driving through your part of the world in a few weeks. If you see a red Fiat with a big dude behind the wheel, wave. At this point, my route is approximate and subject to change. But I’ll be in Raleigh North Carolina for a few days before going to see some friends in Lansing Michigan.

Edited to add: I'm not leaving on this trip until August 30th.

Safe travels.   That Charlotte, NC to the Ohio river stretch has some impressive scenery,  even at interstate speeds..

Can I offer advice about interesting routes through NC and WV?

That looks like a great drive. I’m a sucker for a road trip. Safe travels.

Raleigh’s fun, they have a nice science museum. Stop by the Raleigh Beer Garden if you want to be overwhelmed with drink.

You certainly can, since I did the same for you. This map isn't my route, it just connected the dots between the destinations that I knew I'd be stopping. Having lived in NC for 5 years, I may hop on the interstate for that part of the trip just to get quickly into more unknown places.

I like Raleigh a lot. I lived a little over an hour east of there for about 5 years. And now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that I saw Pacific Rim on the IMAX screen at that science center.

I do not live anywhere near that area, but I’ll wave to people in red Fiats anyway.

It really is the time to do another roadtrip though.....good luck on yours!

Heh, I don’t think I found anything you didn’t already know about, other than maybe the hop through the George Washington National Forest.

Have a blast, be safe, share cool pics.

Last December we drove from eastern PA to Asheville NC for a wedding. The scenery just while driving on the interstate was fantastic.

That's a beautiful area, but I've been through there a few times and I don't think I'll be that far east while driving from Raleigh to Lansing.

Exactly. I found that out driving from Ohio to Raleigh for work a few years back. There were times it was hard to keep my eyes on the freeway because of the view.

Also,  driving back to Ohio a backup lead to my taking some country roads in WV.  My only regret on them was that I wasn't in something better for all the corners than a rental Chrysler 200..

You'll be passing within 100 yards of where I used to live. For a good woodfired pizza, Castiglias in old Fredricksburg is really good, and Family pizzaria near the Stafford hospital has an excellent New York style.

I love WV. My favorite road is US 250 from Staunton Virginia to Phillipi WV. Such a blast.

Lots of good roads around and stuff to see on that route, plus it’s a nice time to drive through those areas.  Have a great trip!

Nice. Maybe when my trip gets closer, I’ll see i f anybody is around and interested in a meetup. I'll probably have some time to kill in Lansing and I'd be up for driving a bit.

Whats time are you passing through the DC area? Have you been there before? Need any advice on things to do in that general area?

The map is a little misleading. I’ll probably not be going directly through DC, but something more like this:

Kinja'd!!!

That will all be happening the Friday before labor day. I leave that morning and I’m meeting people in Raleigh Friday night, so I probably won’t do much sightseeing. I have been to DC before. I’ve spent my whole life living within 4 hours of it, either in Allentown PA or Greenville NC.

When I moved to NC, I still went back and forth to PA regularly to see my family and friends, so that is the only portion of this trip that I’ve already done dozens of times, taking a variety of routes . I should come back to DC though. It’s been a few years.

Based on my math, there’s a remote odds that I’ll pass you in WV heading the other direction.

Don’t forget to get some *real* NC BBQ, and stop at at Biscuit World!

The WV leg of my trip will happen either on labor day or the following day. Things are pretty flexible, other than my weekend plans in Raleigh.

What is your definition of "real" NC BBQ? Just curious since I lived in Eastern NC for 5 years.

Ahh. I know that route well, at least the PA portion. My family is in Frederick, MD and when I was stationed in Groton, CT I found it was easiest to take 95 to 287, go over the Tapanzee and bypass all of NYC, then head west across PA on 78/81. It’s a bit longer than taking 95 all the way to Baltimore then west on 70 , but it was consistently faster. Once I did the 95 trip in like 5.5 hours (flying in my WRX). Every other time it was closer to 8 due to traffic . The PA route was a consistent 6~6.5 hours, and the scenery was nicer than looking at all the dumps in Je rsey .

The only difference in my route is when I hit Harrisburg I’d get on 15 south to go down into Frederick. If you have a deadline you may not want to take it, 81 will probably be faster. But 15 will take you down through some nice places - Gettysburg (obvious historical significance), Frederick which is my hometown, has some cool history, and lots of good places to eat & drink, and then Leesburg to Warrenton is VA wine country with lots of good vineyards and breweries. So if you ever have the time, it may be worth your while.

And DC... oh DC. I had to go into the city to the V. A. for an appointment last Friday, and I was reminded of why I never go into DC even though I live about 8 miles away.

BBQ meaning not a chain. Preferably a small place in the middle of nowhere that looks like a shed in somebody’s backyard, doesn’t take credit cards, and is run by a guy that technically speaks English but has an accent so thick that you can’t really understand wtf they’re saying .

When I made the trip to Raleigh last year, I took 15 all the way from Gettysburg to the bottom of Virginia.

Warrenton is nice. When coming north, sometimes I'd take 95 until I hit traffic in Fredericksburg, and then I'd take 17 past Warrenton up to Winchester.

I live in Allentown PA, maybe 2 miles off of I-78. Over the years I have taken a variety of routes. Sometimes I go through Frederick, other times I stay on 81 to Front Royal VA. I enjoy the variety, and since I’ll be making that drive on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, I’ll probably avoid any big cities.

You pretty much described B’s BBQ in Greenville NC. Cash only, and I always felt like I was about to fall through the floor in the dining room. I love that place.

How was your experience with LocaToWeb when you used it for your outer banks trip? Was it worth buying the app for a few bucks?

Kinja'd!!! Just Jeepin' > Chuckles

Mixed at best . The app, at least on iOS, doesn’t properly save exif data with photos, so any photos you take to share with followers won’t have location data (and you can’t upload photos you didn’t take with the app). They say they haven’t figured out how to get it to work; I want to point them to a dozen iOS apps that do it correctly and suggest they ask someone else, but I don’t want to sound patronizing and frankly I think I’ve given up in it.

I didn’t get any feedback from anyone who found it interesting to follow along, so the money I spent (I also paid for some extra services like a dedicated url and more Google Maps renderings) definitely didn’t seem worthwhile .

I checked on your travels a few times and found it interesting. Mostly I'm looking for an easy way for my family to follow my travels. I can use glympse on my android device, but it's a bit cumbersome.

I think it’s well worth a few  bucks to try it out. I just wouldn’t spend anything on the extras until you’re sure you’re going to get value out of it.

Thanks. Here’s the latest version of my map, still subject to change:

Kinja'd!!!

I am thinking of stopping at Natural Bridge State Resort Park in Kentucky. I probably won’t use highways outside of the first and last days, when I’m trying to make better time through areas I’ve been through a lot.
