My boys start school on Thursday, so I told them to clean out their backpacks.
Their gym clothes have been in their backpacks for the last three months.

know that feel
*places biohazard sign on daughters room*
every other day the laundry basket is full of clothes she’s worn for about 2 minutes.... somehow all the really dirty stuff and socks stay behind in her room

My son’s back pack still has all his shit in it from the last day of school. He is not a fan of school.

I used to do that too. The Cycle begins again!
Although I had pretty negligent parents so maybe you’re better at this.

So. Much. This. I’m convinced that most of the clothes I wash are clean.

My mom is a stickler for cleanliness and I would have got my ass whooped if I had done that as kid, maybe make me wear those clothes for a few hours as additional punishment LOL. But I understand times change.

I didn’t get close enough to find out how bad they are. I’m sure the bag smells that bad too.

Today was the first day of 8th grade. The adventure continues...

Mine are also rising 8th graders. I will be teaching trumpet lessons at their school this fall. That should be interesting. I haven’t taught lessons like that in 15 years.

My son won’t start school until after Labor Day. He’s starting middle school, which brings a change in bus schedule, so my wife has him in “training” waking him up at 6:00 AM instead of 7:30
AM as before. He’s not happy with it.

Oh yay! That’s gonna be fun.
Mine is going to be taking tip the flute again. Her old school had band via the Music Learning Band company, which it turns out isn’t the greatest for reasons I could get into over several cold beers. This year, the local catholic high school band director is spearheading an outreach program to the junior highs, and our current school is a beneficiary. W e will get band done right, if small to start off .
I’m dusting off my flute.

Time to launder the whole thing. I probably did this at least 1 year, leaving my gym clothes in my backpack all summer.

You used to be a teenage boy. You had to have known how gross they would be.

It sounds like a good time to have them start doing there own laundry.

One of my best childhood friends has 4 kiddos...everytime I think about family or kids....I visit him for a weekend. I immediately go home and hug my cat.

Of course; because she’s wearing them!

He’s not happy with it.
I’ve been letting my boys sleep in over the summer so I can enjoy a quiet morning. This week I’ve been getting them up earlier. They’re not happy either. 6:00 is going to come mighty early on Thursday.
Good luck with middle school.

Good deal. My boys are on their third director in three years. This one looks like a keeper though. Very energetic, very organized. She’s also a trumpet player, so there’s that.

That’s a very early start to the school year
. When did they start their holidays?
![]() 08/13/2019 at 15:18 |

I think I was a teenager once, but I’m not sure. My wife keeps telling me that all the stupid shit they are doing is normal. That may be true, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
![]() 08/13/2019 at 15:19 |

I agree, but it’s such a pain in the ass to get them to help that I just do it my damn self.

That’s like the old saying that the best part of being a grandparent is that you get to go home.

I used to live with a lass who’d try on several outfits a day because it was work casual day (she wore a nurses uniform when on ward but casual when training or in meetings, etc...) or going to lunch or going out for the evening.
She’d have me take pictures of her front and back (so she knew what others were looking at from behind), one outfit from nine plus would make it so the other eight plus went in the wash because she had worn it (for two minutes).

I learned to do my own laundry because I didn’t want to get up early on Saturday and bring it down. So many men in my college dorm had no idea how to do laundry.

lol... yeah pretty much
but also coz she just kicks shit under the bed rather than tidy up after herself
ive pointed this out to her before....but teenagers.... like arguing with a rock that makes fart noises

They were done on May 23 this year. It’s nice finishing that early because we can get our family vacation out of the way before places get too crowded. We usually travel in the second and third weeks of June. We also get a full week off for Thanksgiving. It’s a nice schedule.
![]() 08/13/2019 at 15:24 |

They are old enough they can clean their own clothes, so the real failure here is being too close when they did so.

And there I was feeling sorry for the poor American kids getting short holidays - secondary
schools here (age 11/
12 to 17/18) get mid June to the start of S
eptember.
![]() 08/13/2019 at 15:28 |

That is their plan.
Tell them they have to clean their own clothes now, and girls will not like them if they smell bad.

Our school district moved to a system where they count instructional minutes instead of days. They lengthened the school day by something like three minutes which let them do a shorter school term. Or something like that. I don’t profess to understand. I just send them when they are ready to take them.
![]() 08/13/2019 at 15:33 |

Same here. Girls and boys in college had no clue how to do laundry.

Schools have started on August 1 for the past couple years . In 2017, they moved the first day to July 31, but that was weird apparently, so it’s back to August 1. People think that’s weird, but all of June and July are off. Everyone is out by Memorial Day.

Schools in Atlanta started about two weeks ago, which is nuts to me.
NY schools didn’t start until September when I was growing up
![]() 08/13/2019 at 16:46 |

They used to have us go two days then get Labor Day off. Then they made us come back for two days after Memorial Day, when the kids aren’t doing anything except playing games and helping the teachers pack up the room. This tighter schedule is much better.

I have a 17 y/o son and a 14y/o daughter. They learned from a young age how to adult (like I was raised) . Both do the laundry and cook if needed. I gave my son a smart phone for his 12th birthday and told him to call and have it activated. Nobody learns how to deal with customer support in a high school class. When my daughter turned 12, she got a phone. My son helped her activate it.
The tech has changed since I was a kid. I helped my dad pull and replace an engine when I was that age and I figured out how to program the VCR to record Knight Rider.

In the Army, there were something like 100 soldiers and two washer/dryers. You needed to sit there and wait for your turn, then sit and guard your clothes. Billy Self and I would play Cribbage. Washing clothes took 3 to 6 hours, if you could get it done at all. The alternative was paying at the laundromat.

Back right before we had iPod Touch and smart phones, we had one or two little Lumix cameras about for my girls to use. And use them they did, to take pictures of the backs of their heads so they could see how their hair looked.

Ye’, mine was a 21-22 year old blonde student nurse.
It was more like having an adult(-ish) daughter than a flat mate. I sometimes miss it.

Yeah the laundry became a chore as soon as we could reach the buttons and folding laundry started before that. Learning to cook came from, helping mom cook dinner.
My wife was woefully unprepared for being an adult. I will not let our kids be spoiled and unprepared.
