Loved it thanks for posting. Seems like they were really trying to make it reliable, lot of interesting construction details. Is that similar to (or the same as) VANOS?

Timing chain on back of engine. That's never been an issue before...

Interesting with the exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. The packaging on that is pretty amazing. I wonder how bad a thermostat housing change would be in situ while still in the engine bay.

At least it’s a simple setup with the inline design, basically one chain, and then the little oil pump drive chain. Much simple than the monstrosity on the back of my engine.

Sounds like it’s pretty stout in the places it counts. This should be an interesting build to follow. The deck is solid, the crank is forged, they were saying something about the lifters having clips that should help with valve float, the windage/girdle on the bottom end. It all sounds like BMW got their shit together on this one.
That intercooler is pretty crazy, the packaging on that is really impressive. I wonder how much they will need to modify it to cope with the increased air flow once they have the bigger turbo on there.
Should be a fun build.

That timing cover being in the way of mounting to the engine stand, kinda reminds me of the Saab 900 engine...
When we pulled it out of my brother’s car, we couldn’t mount it to the stand right away because there was a big plate on the rear of the engine. But it wasn’t a timing cover; its main purpose i s to provide a mounting location for the starter, because the transmission mounts underneath the block, and there’s no bellhousing for the starter to bolt to. So we had to remove the cover while it hung on the engine hoist, exposing some holes that we could then use for the engine stand.
