So the wife’s Honda Fit, 2007, first model year in the US, bought new in 2006, recently developed a clunk in the front end. All the signs from my internet research pointed to the sway bar end link, and upon inspection that was indeed the problem. $35 and a day later (next day shipping from “Big Auto Parts Chain” It is all fixed.

Kinja'd!!!

(Too lazy to actually take a picture of the car, random internet download, but same model and color)

This is the first non-maintenance part (i.e. not brakes, fluids, tires) I have replaced on the car in 13 years and 100,000 miles. I am not sure whether I should celebrate the reliability of the car, or start worrying now that the seal is broken and things need to be fixed. As usual the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

I know that is the right take, but when they are so good for so long a little part of me thinks (hopes) that train never stops, which of course is not true (except for the late 60s refrigerator the lives in my basement).

I’d say you’ve had a good run, sell or trade before the gremlins come.

The moment came for my wife Cavalier, and we bought her Fit to replace it. Now the Fit has been a good soldier for her. Only repair in 3 year has been a blower motor, and front brakes. So about 500 bucks in maintenance costs aside from oil changes and tires.

I love how the house isn’t body color. Not maybe cars have done that, probably due to extra costs. The cool thing is you can swap headlights to have a unique look. I’ve seen a white one with red headlights and it looked awesome.

Celebrate, you should be happy, be Jazz’d up about it.

Kinja'd!!!

You could always look around for another car, just in case though.

I can assure you that you’ll need another sway bar end link soon.

( Unless you replaced both ).

I wouldn’t worry about it, things will wear out but a $35 repair isn’t something I’d worry to much about.

You got a good run. But it doesn’t mean it’s time to ditch the car. It’s paid off, so it doesn’t cost you anything other than registration and insurance, which you’ll have anyway on another car. You can take the amount you would make on a payment and figure that’s your budget for repairs. As long as over a 3-6 month period you don’t exceed that amount, then you’re still ahead. Now is when you start looking at repairs in larger chunks though. If a sway bar bushing goes out, you replace both sides, plus the end links. If one ball joint or control arm bushing goes, you do both sides and outer tie rod ends, and maybe even the struts (but that might be pushing it a bit)  then get an alignment. I imagine the parts are relatively inexpensive, even OEM bits, so you can go that route. If it’s due for a water pump and timing belt, you do those services, keep fluids clean and just drive it. You’re definitely into the range where parts will fail, especially suspension, but you can replace lots of parts for the cost of a new car payment.  And if you’re able to do the repairs, then you will save a bunch and can afford to buy OEM parts for the repairs.  Obviously, they are well engineered pieces.

.... Or figure you’ve had a good run with it and it owes you nothing and grab another similar car....

Celebrate! Man, I thought my truck was reliable (also purchased new in '06), but you win the prize!

I normally would, but have way too many projects going on right now and too little time.  Also not like a tie rod end, if it goes out it will not result in me losing control of vehicle/steering
