I’d like one of each of those things, please. And a cigar. But first I should really get a back yard.

I’m in my drive way. Neighbors come over and we co-mingle. I’m 3/4 the way thru a growler of my local brew pubs finest and really feeling it right about now. Everyone has gone to bed and I’m alone with a fire, brew and a book. Couldn’t be better. Maybe a cigar, but not really into those, yet. One bad habit at a time.

I can sit out on our back porch and have a beer and a cigar but it’s not the same. I want a real house, dammit.
I don’t know if I would be willing to give up cigars. I think I could stop drinking alcohol in a snap without missing it, but a good cigar is such a profoundly joyful experience to me.

My dad instilled a pretty strong prohibition on tobacco. He started smoking in his teens, and made it quite clear to me that he’d put his size 13 shoe up my ass if I started smoking. I’m 50 now, and his words still ring in my ears, and I hope in my 16 year old sons. Still, a good stogie could still be on my future.

My mom smoked for a long time. I’d heard my dad smoked cigars when I was very little but I don’t remember it. I’ve never had a cigarette and never wanted to try one, but I’ve been into cigars since just after high school. One of the reasons I like them so much is that they take a while to smoke so it gives you time to sl ow down and think about things.
