Credit due, I do believe the W8 was VW’s first W engine put into regular production. The W12 and W16 were definitely executed better. It certainly helped that they weren’t being crammed into a Passat.

Actually, this gives me an idea for a slant VR4;  like a VR6 mixed with a Chrysler Slant 6, but with 4 cylinders ... I’m sure it would work great...

I drove one back when they were brand new — definitely nice and quick, but not worth the $8-$10k premium over the V6 4motion (which I still have). There were a FEW unique options but otherwise it was just a slightly faster Passat GLX that made cool sounds.
